I'm confused on how the whole nameserver thing works. I have a static ip, and run a web server, but how to I register a domain for my IP? My ISP is DSLExtreme.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

you need to purchase a domain at a place like godaddy.com, then find someone to do the DNS hosting. take the dns hosting info and eneter into the control panel at godaddy. since you have static IP, you wont need a dns client.

domains names -> godaddy.com
DNS hosting -> zoneedit.com <- free for up to 5 zones

You don't need anyone to provide DNS hosting if you have a domain name from one of the many domain name services. I've never done anything but registered my domain with www.domaindirect.com, and my domain is accessable. I redirect to my Comcast web pages for web pages, no need to host my own at my location. :)

you dont even need a static IP... u can use a dynamic DNS service like no-ip.com and have your DNS name registered at the same time.
