Just got a speeding ticket going 74 in a 55mph zone. :( For Georgia, it's 2 points on my license if I just pay it. Will this affect my insurance at all? I just turned 25. Should I just pay or go to court to try to get it reduced? Any advice would be appreciated. :)

Go to court, ask to get it reduced or no points. It can't hurt to try.

It would be more cost effective to research and design a time travel machine and take it back in time in order to learn to not drive 19mph over the speed limit, than to pay your new insurance premiums.

What are my chances of getting it reduced? My last ticket was about 4-5 years ago.

How much will it affect my insurance?

So your first ticket was when you turned 20/21, and another when you're 25? What's with the milestones? ;)

My only ticket I got in GA was in Augusta about 10 years ago, I went down to the courthouse talked to some lady, court clerk I believe, she said that I could just pay the ticket and they wouldn't put any points on my record.

If your last ticket was that long ago, and since you weren't excessively speeding (I think most states consider 20-25 over to be excessive?) you probably have an excellent chance of requesting traffic school and getting it. I once got traffic school for 93 in a 65, actually. If you get traffic school... it should erase the points but you'll still have to pay the ticket (and school costs, usually). Still cheaper than the insurance increase which will stay for years.

Did he give you reckless driving as well as speeding? Some states have an automatic reckless driving charge if you are more than "x" miles over the speed limit.

Georgia doesn't have that automatic reckless. This web page has much good information about speed laws in the different states: http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/laws.html.

I have always shown up on the court date, and they have always reduced it to a "ghost ticket". Payed the court fee, but no insurance points.

Always fight it if you have the time. If the officer doesnt show up you win (in my state anyway)

Since your record is relatively clean, if you take the time to go to court and were polite to the officer, you'll probably get either driving school or a significant reduction to the ticket.

In any case, its worth your time.

20 miles over the speed limit is only 2 points? Are you sure? in jersey that would be more of a 4 or 5 point ticket, and would be risking losing your license. I would double check that.

The law permits a 15 day jail sentence for 11 MPH over the speed limit. State police traffic stops by marked cars only. - New York

Tickets for less than 10 over the limit are not reported - Oklahoma

Mandatory license suspension for +11 in a work zone.Penn

Failure to use turn signals is reckless driving. In recent years some judges have started sending people to jail for driving 90+ on an Interstate.Virginia

+15 punished as speeding but is worth 3-6 points, the same as reckless driving. Effective January 1, 2007, +30 or 80 is a misdemeanor with a requirement for 2-5 days in jail or 36 hours of community service.Hawaii

I'm surprised I'm in a more lenient state.

Georgia:
Exceeding the speed limit by more than 14 miles per hour but
less than 19 miles per hour.....................................................................2 points
Exceeding the speed limit by 19 miles per hour or more but
less than 24 miles per hour.....................................................................3 points

The OP said 2 pts, but the code seems to indicate 3. I dunno.
