Got Shafted By My ISP...Now Who?

I have been using bigplanet for my dial-up ISP for the last year or so, and just recently i was not able to log on. I called to ask why and they said i have been abusing my account, since i am logged on more than 150 hours a month, even though i pay for an unlimited account. So screw them... Was wondering what people recommend, since i cannot get cable or dsl. I was looking at earthlink, and a local place.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,

Brad

Welcome to the club.

Seriously, whatever you do, check and see how many hours you can use before they don't consider it 'unlimited' anymore.

<< Its 150 hours, which is not very many when you think about it... >>

~5hrs/day
I probably log 6/day on average at home after work. Granted, I'm not actually doing something online the whole time, but do they really want you to disconnect and reconnect every 5 minutes?
I'd say you could probably sue them for false advertising.

Are the other 2 places you were looking at both 150 hours max too?

Wtf man fight that shyt. If your contract says "unlimited" then fvck them. Stupid bastards have no right to cut you off. Call and tell them if they dont turn ur account back on, youre gonna stick your dick down their throat, then let the attorney general have his try at it.

I know i was thinking false advertisment myself... I already gave them a nasty call, these people are just not worth my effort... Ill take a look at earthlink then...

Thanks

I have never heard of an isp that claims to provide unlimited access, to only allow you 150 hours a month... That is absurd, they should advertise 150 hours a month then!

I have. A lot of those cheap ISP's do that.

I recommend you switch to Star Power if they are in your area. I switched from Earthlink to them.

I use this place for dialup. I'm online 24-7, get cut off very infrequently, and unlimited means unlimited. Cheaper than Earthlink too (I think).

Try sysmatrix.net if it has a local access number. $10 a month, I'm on 24/7 no software, no hassles, can get 10MB of webspace for free if you want it. It's been a great find for me and my family since we are out of range for DSL/cable.

Dare I say it but you might want to try AOL. I'm 18, signed up with AOL in the beginning of 2001 with a paypal credit card (Just to let you know they accept anyone over 18) and tried their free 1000 hours even though I have DSL. I signed up 'cause I thought I needed it for a school newsgroup 😱 Anyways, I called in to cancel the first time on January 13th, my "billing date" is January 16th, they gave me another free month until Feb. 16. I called on Feb 15 to cancel and they gave me 6 more free months. So now my supposedly first payment starts on August 16. Chances are, they're going to give me more free months, possibly up to a year. Of course I'm going to call in and cancel on August 15. I'm the kind of person who will remember these things 😉 Unfortunately for AOL, they think otherwise. So if you want a temporary solution, give AOL a try until you get situated during the free months they give you. BTW, AT doesn't allow you to post on here with AOL accounts. So it's like a catch-22 🙂

To add, a lot of expensive ISPs do the same thing as well...

<< MWink what do you like more about star power? >>

More reliable, and $2 cheaper per month. I think they also have better tech support but I never used it (my father has had them for 5 years or so and has used it). I signed up for a whole year and saved another $2 per month.

As far as AOL is concerned, they'd have to be paying me in order for me to use their software. And no, that wasn't a joke.

Earthlink works. I've never had a problem with them in 7 years. Finally went from dialup to DSL a couple months ago and am very happy.

That sucks. I know I have K-Mart Blue Light and they haven't said anything about me leaving myself logged on probably over 250-300 hours a month on their unlimited service. Maybe try them, although I don't know if them claiming bankruptcy is going to effect service.

On a somewhat related note, has anyone noticed that AOHeLL tries to bullsh!t you with those 1000 hour cds all the time saying though that you need to use the thousand hours within a months time. There are only 720 hours in a 30 day month. That is really low making people think they are getting a thousand hours free, but not letting them know that it's impossible to use those hours within their specified timeframe. CROOKS, just for that reason alone I would never use their service.
