Store level management sucks big time;a lot of working hour, average salary. District level and up is pretty good if you can handle it

i think what toant103 is trying to say is that he applied for a corporate management training job which would eventually lead to management level work - as in looking at excel spreadsheets of sales data and what not - as opposed to being a walmart hourly wage employee.

if this is your first ding, then 1)you've either got a bunch of offers in your pocket or 2)you didn't apply to very many places. i remember when my class entered the job market several years back, we were just catching the beginning of the downturn in the economy, and my roommates and i collected so many rejection letters we were able to wallpaper an entire hallway.

I can't even get a regular low end on the totem pole job. I went to mcdonalds and the manager told me they were over staffed. Since when is mcdonalds overstaffed. I've handed in an app at pretty much every single place that offers jobs that I can get to using the bus system in my town since I have no car. Not one job. I even go back and ask the manager if they've had time to review my application and if they could possibly offer me an interview. "Sorry kid we're cutting back as it is" 21 responsible college student can't get a job at mcdonalds. I'm getting pretty depressed about it.

I get jobs in my mailbox via the university all the time. My problem is that they're asking for a 6 month internship, and that would mess up my school schedule! :/

Wallmart just put in a distribution center where I live and they needed 800 employees starting pay for most jobs was $11.00 with a pretty good benifit package. They had 3000 appliciants, they were from Colorado, Iowa, South Dakota and Kansas and Nebrasksa.
Now a Menards is coming to town and it wont be open for 10 months, already they have had over 1000 appliciants, tough to find a job now, I love these pissant SOB's that think that it is easy to find a job and if you dont have one you are just lazy. A company in Hastings Ne. that has been in business building furnaces and air conditioners just closed it's doors and 600 jobs were gone, most employees had been there for over 15 years, no jobs for them I guess they are just lazy. They are moving the plant to Mexico.
In lincoln Ne the Goodyear plant there has over 200 employees and they all have been given notice the place will close and they are moving the plant to Mexico. Gates Rubber co In Denver Colorado closed down a huge warehouse operation in McCook Ne. leaving 75 employees behind.

if it makes you feel better, i know of two students who graduated not too long ago both with a masters degree in electrical engineering, and they both can't find any company that will hire them. They are both working in a mall selling sunglasses, can you belive that???? electrical engineers selling sunglasses?

Walmart assistent salary starts off at 32k I believe so it's not bad for starters. Store managers do make tons of money and a bonus for a year can be as much or more as their normal salary.

Even if you do that, us older people lose out to the young high school folk type. Im married with a kid, 26 years old. Theyd MUCH rather have a young kid than me. Theyve told me that to my face. Trust me, IVe gone in with a totally dumbed down resume. I just think Im in some middle ground.

Also, as someone else has said, the competition for jobs is amazing. Just this past tuesday, I called a place asking information about the job. The lady happened to mention during the job that they had already taken in 2500 applications. And this was a small little place here in my small little town. Employers dont want to deal with that. Usually they just take a few, maybe the first 100.

Ive been doing this for 13 months now, and it aint fun. Each day calling, emails, letters. Everyone has given me their "opinions", their versions of my resume, their tips on what to do. Oh well. To those who have jobs, count your blessings. Im just trying to pay rent.

I would NEVER want to be an assistant there... you work terrible hours(8 hour shifts? forget it, more like 10-12 every day, at least at our store). It isn't until you become a co-manager that you start making real good money... and amdskip is right, the bonus' for store managers are huge...co's also get a nice bonus, but nothing like the store mgr.

There's several guys about my age (21) at the Walmart I work at who have a good bit of computer/electrical experience, but we're stocking shelves. My 2 years of college have proven to be almost entirely worthless, as the job market vanished while I was in college - the Cisco internship program had to place its participants in jobs on campus, because no companies could even accept interns.

Yeah, all the night managers - support and assistant - are there when I punch in, and are still there when I punch out, even after putting in overtime. And our store manager, he'll leave at 11pm, and be back in at 5am a few days in a row. I don't think he actually owns a home; don't see why he'd need to, cause he'd probably never be in it. But man, if he lives to retirement age, like maybe 55

for the amount of money he's probably getting, he'll be well set. Hopefully it'll have been worth it to him. I don't think I could ever stand to devote that much time to my job, especially something that I'm not exactly thrilled to be doing.

Store managers do get paid big bucks ($120,000/yr with bonus) in my area. However they are moved every 6 months and work upwards of 90 to 100 hours a week. So in reality unless your single and dont want a social life, the job is not for you.

I applied to well over 100 jobs before I found one. (I was keeping track in an excell sheet so I would not forget to do callbacks) Finaly a temp agency found me a place to work for 2 weeks, and that company hired me on full time. Yay.

You will find a job. Good luck.

I don't think store managers get moved all that often... our store manager has been here for close to 2 years, and AFAIK the store only became 'available' because the old manager had some kind of health problem(s). We've also had one of the same co-managers for at least the same amount of time. I know assistants do come and go, though.

Yep, thats correct. Our store manager has been here since day 1 and thats been a little over 3 years. He came from being a co-mananger at a store about 45 minutes away. His wife is an assistent for walmart so they basically hardly see each other. He does want to leave when they get another store built that will be bigger than ours closer to the store that his wife works at.
