Sorry if its long..
Maybe you guys can explain it to me..
I am living with 2 roomates this summer in Phoenix while interning. All 3 of us are summer interns for the same company, one guy I lived with last summer (John) & one girl (Amber) previously unknown to us; she just moved in last Saturday.
Memorial Day weekend is our only 3 day weekend of the summer. I wanted to see parts of Arizona that I didnt see last summer. From Monday on, Amber kept saying how she wanted to go up to Flagstaff (2.5 hrs north, where she goes to college) to see her friends, but she complained that she didn't have any money for gas.
I had heard that there was some good nature and Indian ruins to see up there so I wanted to go also. I offered to drive and pay for the gas if she could find me a floor to sleep on (I thought it was fair, but maybe not?)
The friend she tried to set us up with was kinda sketchy - difficult to get ahold of, she's a 20 year old dating a 36 year old guy with kids..finally Amber figured out that she was going camping, and I said that would be ok also..I borrowed a cot and a sleeping bag from a co-worker and we headed up there on Friday after work.
I met her friends, they seemed nice enough but definitely didnt go out of their way to make me feel welcome. BTW, their idea of camping is bringing a trailer to a campground..
I didn't want to be too much of a burden, so early in the morning I left the campsite and went to see the national parks and Flagstaff..I tried talking to Amber to find out what was going on (even offered to take her somewhere to watch her favorite Pistons play) but she seemed very 'cool'. Pretty hard to get in touch with also, don't know if she was ignoring the phone/my calls or the service was bad (probably all 3).
When I finally headed back to the site, I got there around 10 PM (struggled to find it in the dark, and couldn't reach Amber or her friend)..I finally figure out where I'm at, go lookign for her in a trailer to find out about when we were leaving on Sunday..she's like, we're all going to bed, its been a long day, I recommend that you do too (and she gave me the look, like wtf are you doing here??)..I ask her about her phone, she says she shut it off, I told her that made it kinda hard to call, heh
I go back out of the trailer, and over to where a few ppl are BBQin, they offer me some food..one guy tells me that Hidalgo is looking for me, he wants to ask me about Hank, mentions that he is going to make taco meat out of me? I kinda played it off, because I had only briefly met Hank the previous night, he's the 36 year old boyfriend
Practically, next thing I know, drunk Hidalgo is up in my face, asking me if I have a problem with Hank, of course I say no, but he punches me in the face! Then keeps going after me as I fall to the ground, takes 3 guys to pull him away from me, and Hidalgo's still stuggling with them
I'm stunned, one guy escorts me to my car, that he doesnt know why and he doesn't care, he tells me just to leave, I still don't understand..I drive the 2.5 hrs back to Phoenix and leave the girl there (she didn't answer her phone anyway)
Why did this happen?
-Did I ask too much out of Amber, and she sent him thru Hank?
-He's drunk idiot looking to fight, I think I had heard that he was in a fight earlier
-Bad karma? (ok, I admit it, I went to the bathroom and ate the breakfast at the Hampton Inn this morning, but I promised myself I'd stay there next time to make up for the $2 breakfast..)
Regardless, while I will hopefully never see those other ppl again, I have to live with Amber for 10 more weeks..
Update 1:
Amber called me at 10:30 AM, about 12 hrs after the incident, left a message, she apologized, said she had spoken to our roomate about it (I called him last night when I was leaving to give him the heads up). She said her phone was turned off to save battery and that she would try talking to us later..
I can't really kick Amber out because all 3 of our names are on the lease..plus I have no proof she did anything
As for Hidalgo, I have no idea who he was..my only guess is that he is some friend of Hank's..he was definitely older than me (i'm 22)
For calling the cops, I thought about it, but finding the place was hard enough, I couldn't give the cops directions out there, and I definitely couldn't identify the guy..besides its not like it would have been a more hospitable place for me to stay after they came and arrested him
Update 2:
Amber came home today. I didn't see her for a few hours, then she knocked on my door to talk. She apologized repeatedly, said she didn't even meet Hidalgo until the next day after the incident. that he had just arrived at the site that night.
These people truly are trailer trash: old man river Hank, evidently earlier in the night had beat the sh!t out of his 14 year old son for getting drunk on vodka+gatorade..to the point of bruises. Nevertheless the son looks up to his dad..I feel sorry for the kid, when he grows up he will be a repeat of his father, who is also severly depressed despite getting some from a 20 year old..by 14 every kid has had some to drink, and almost all of us dont get beat up for it
Amber told me that she heard about the fight a few minutes after it happend. She said she was already half-asleep-she heard parts of my voicemail but with bad service and her being tired and me already leaving she thought she would call me in the morning
I don't think she is totally innocent, but I don't think she instigated the fight..she said that Hidalgo has done this ****** before (he is a high school wrestling champ, ~20 years old), regardless I will just be cordial to her..I think she is interested in another 35 year old with a 7 year old kid, the three of them slept in a tiny bed together, and I know that he is interested in her
