Got pulled over again! Yay!

Since ATOT loves cops, here's my writeup. On Friday I was driving down to LA from SF Bay Area. I made it to LA and dropped my friend off and was driving to my next stop, a place to rest.

Somewhere along I-10 East after the 405, I saw a cop pull next to me. I muttered "oh shit." I looked at my speedo and I was doing 71-72 tops. I let go a little and slid under 70. He pulled behind me and flicked his lights on. My girlfriend who was playing "Draw Something" the whole ride down noticed finally.

I did my best to be on good behavior and the officer immediately told me he "paced" me going 82. Full of shit. My car is a VW Golf GTI Mk6, and knowing those cars, the engine hits 3200rpm at least to maintain a speed like that. I don't like wasting gas, and the only time I even did 82 was on the I-5 coming down. I highly doubt I hit that in the city and LA freeways suck dick. They're windy, and feel like war zones with the potholes, and if anything it was raining and I was relying on my GPS which really sucks at warning me about exits. I was in the right lane which the officer acknowledged, and I might have passed a few cars here and there, but to my knowledge, I was under 75 the whole time in the city. He also told me he paced me from [some exit] to [some exit]. I looked clueless so he asked me where I was from.

He asked me for my license, which I produced and when I looked up he was 3 inches away from me. He was probably sniffing for alcohol. It was 3am, so I don't blame him. I asked my gf to rip off the temp registration sticker for my new car for him and he asked for insurance too. My gf fumbled around the glove compartment, and the as I was helping her find it, the officer said "ok just slow down, you're in the rain." He probably saw I was from NorCal and I was totally lost and using my GPS to navigate my way to my friend's house. He didn't care that I finally found the insurance card and waved me off. The whole process was like 2 minutes or so tops. He didn't run my license, probably had a few seconds to read my registration only.

Kinda sucks cuz I just got my windows tinted (barely so even though the front exceeds CA legal limit, I doubt he could've known unless he did a light meter test). You're not supposed to roll down your windows, but I had to the day after. Ugh.

Anyway, it's good to know I got no ticket. I've been pulled over 3 times now, and never got a ticket, but this was the first time I somehow knew I was just gonna be let go since I didn't feel like I was speeding. I was completely taken back when he said 82 though.

Cliffs:
- Pulled over for doing "82" in a 65.
- No ticket. Whew.
- Probably was BSing about pacing me.
- Probably was let go because I was an out-of-towner
- Cop was definitely hunting for DUI.

Questions:
How legit is getting pulled over based on being "paced?" I'm talking for speeds like this. If you're doing 100 and got pulled over for being paced, yeah, there's not much you can say, but for marginal speeding?

He probably was BSing you about the reason he pulled you over. He was definitely fishing for a DUI.

He pulled you over at 3am - he suspected you were drunk.

He was behind or next to you for quite some time before you noticed and you never slowed down - therefore you were not alert - so he assumed you had been drinking.

Yeah this is what I'm usually REALLY good about in my other car. Now with an auto dimming mirror and 30% tints in the rear, it's harder to make out cars behind me. However, I still pay a lot of attention frequently. I don't know how long he paced me for, and I certainly was NOT doing very fast.

Another time I saw a cop pull behind me and tail me for 5 minutes and I did 65 cruise control before he pulled me over. I had been drinking hours ago and was WELL under the limit. Boy was I scared that time though

man one time I knew I was gonna get pulled over (230a); this cop busted an illegal uturn and started following me (lights off). I started slowing down, he started slowing down, so I just said fuck it and pulled over. He turned on his lights then. let me go though, same shit - busted headlight and he was looking for DUIs

Well pacing is perfectly legal, most police cars have calibrated speedometers. Still it's about the easiest way to beat a ticket too so most just go with radar/laser.

However; this is just a loophole to do a stop and basic 'visual' search of your vehicle.

Should you have gone irate, he'd have probably asked you out to do a field side test. In general, unless you are absolutely sure you are going to do well and the cop is not going to arrest you anyway (most of the time they already know and the FST is just for more evidence on camera, almost everyone looks drunk doing them) it's best to just tell the cop that you cannot perform those kinds of tests well, but you have no problem with the breath test (if you have been drinking ask for a blood test, I had 6 beers in about 4 hours and blew a .168 somehow. The lawyer I spoke with believes it was due to having my lower lip split from the outside all the way to my teeth that morning...either way once you register a breath reading over the limit you are screwed at least in Florida with that, it's cheaper just to pay it out and nicely they let you buy your community service back for $10/hr ;))

Your tint should be ok. If you don't see it lifted at the top edge you are ok. It's more using the windows regularly before the tint fully cures/dries.

Reminds me, i got only a written warning for 76 in a 45 the other day, rushing to my brothers wedding

First time I've been pulled over and NOT gotten a ticket, and first time being pulled over in 5 1/2 years...

I was driving to work yesterday, completely zoned out. Stereo was turned way down, couldn't even understand what podcast was playing. Then I looked over and there was this stupid pickup trying to merge into my lane on the right. I was in the middle lane, so I looked down and saw that I was doing 82. I sped up a bit so the guy could get in behind me but he stayed in the right lane. Well wtf?

I looked in my rearview and saw a cop behind him. Well I knew the cop had already clocked me, so no point in slowing down. I kept on going and the dude and the cop took the next exit. Poor guy probably had a suspended license and the cop chose him over my speeding ass.

Funny thing I never go that fast. I always go around 75. I was just so zoned out that I didn't notice. Oh well.

How else do you clock someone at night on a highway? They're not going to pull over to clock people and they have to patrol the highways.

Obviously, you were driving faster than everyone else for him to notice and follow/pace you.

Do you know how tough/dangerous it is being a cop ... especially in LA? Slow down or buy a less conspicuous car (pehaps a Nissan Versa) and you might not be pulled over as much.

At least you have not gotten a ticket.

you dont blame him for detaining you just because you are out late?

to pull you over for no reason other than being somewhere at a certain time?

The OP likes to complain about nothing while writing more than necessary. He's got numerous threads about his non-eventful driving experiences. Some people need attention.
