Yippie!
I got permission (ie budget) to buy a new computer for the office -- $1000 price limit; no monitor needed.

I normally build my own PC's for home, wondering if I should do the same for the office one? Seems like I could get a better deal by building one...

You could buy a dell (or similar name) and get Tech Support or you could build and become the full time tech support for that machine. Your choice.

in a business, i would never waste the time it takes to build a PC when i can get one with all the tech. support and RMAing i need from Dell.

That's exactly what I'm wondering....

And if you build it, you will be look at as being the cause of any issues with the computer. In this case buy it, there is no upside to building it.

I'd buy a PC (from Dell, HP, Compaq, etc.)
I wouldn't build it for a PC at work.
Too many unforeseen consequences may appear later!

If something goes wrong with the machine during a critical time, your name and the name of your first born will be cursed for all eternity. However, if it is a Dell machine and it goes south you are in better shape.

My options for what kind of new PC to get at work are basically pick out something on dell's website". They wouldn't let me build one.

as many have said already...
there just ain't no benefit to building one.

especially of your manager is not to familiar with the hardware...
you'll always be the #1 usual suspect for any computer related problems.

you might be able to save them some money... but will you get to see that savings?
and for that savings... is it worth your trouble to be nailed anytime anything goes wrong?

just buy dell.

You are absolutely insane if you considered building it even for an instant.

Dell has exactly what you need.

ok, you guys are convincing me to buy one.
I bought a PC from Dell once before in 1997, when their service was very good.
Now their service sucks relative to that time, and I know far too many people with DOA's from Dell in the past two years.

Assuming that I want to avoid Dell, HP, and Compaq, who would you pick these days?

Dell busniess service is a lot better than Dell Home service is. Mostly because busniesses spend more money with dell...they want to keep customers...

If you're going to buy an OEM PC I'd personally buy a Dell, they have some incredible offers right now but I'm sure you don't wanna hear about that, do you?

Then get a Micron PC or Gateway, just hope they're still around 1-2 years from now.
