Got Our New Bengal Kitten!

We got him from Nodngait Bengals out of Port Deposit, MD. We actually live in Fairfax, VA, so it was a bit of a hike. You can see pictures of his mother (Pocket Change) & father (Paint the Town) on that site.

As part of the contract we're required to have him neutered within a year. I believe the reasoning is they charge quite a bit more if you intend to breed or have him in a cat show.

Jobu's slightly smaller brother was still available as of this past weekend.

That was actually the motivation I used to train them. For Mitzi I would whistle while preparing her food, the others I would call when preparing the food so they got used to coming when I called their name. We didn't have her from real young, she was a stray some kids were going to torture that me and my siblings rescued so she learned it at an older age. That's how we've gotten every cat everyone in our family has owned, stray rescue (not necessarily saving it from kids). My mom has a feral adult cat that adopted her, plus 2/3 of her kittens (third went to my sister). We had another, Turpentine, that some kids dunked in turpentine and were going to set him on fire. Meanest cat I'd ever met, didn't help that we had to bathe him so he didn't poison himself trying to lick himself clean. Poor kitty cats.

Jeez... I do love cats, but I try to keep things in perspective and not value a pet's life over a human being's. That said, any kids who would do that are seriously effed up and deserve some serious punishment/intervention, if for no other reason than the fact that anyone capable of doing that could cause a much bigger tragedy for humans down the road.

A lot of people even drive very nice cars and live in an apartment. $700 isn't exactly much to put towards a house, and if he is saving up for a better place, $700 isn't going to do much to stop the progress....

Our rent is $1650 + Utilities.

Our mortgage this time next year (if all goes as planned) will be between $2500-3000.

Trust me, I'm not posting our ridiculous real estate prices as a boast or anything, just to defend against the thought that we're blowing a big portion of our rent money. If we were living back in Southeastern PA (where I grew up) where our earning potential is roughly 55% of our current income down here, and our rent was $600, we wouldn't have the discretionary income to buy a kitten like this.

Even though it costs a ton more to live down here, with the DC job market, your income tends to be a lot higher.

At least, that's what I tell myself to sleep at night. 😛
