got new shoes: is there some preventative stuff I can do to keep em fresh'n'clean?

For an existing pair, Penguin Shoes makes some reasonably priced stuff to protect whatever material your shoes are made of.

If you want some new shoes that will take care of themselves, I recommend you get some Keen Shoes. I sell them at work and have 2 pairs myself, the H2 for summer and the Bronx Mid for winter. Both are Totally waterproof and dry off really quick. The footbed is antibacterial so they dont stink even after using them for a long time and sweating in them.

If there althetic shoes use some of that water proofing stuff from the shoe store of your choosing. Its scotch guard for your sneakers. They work great unless your walking in mud.

thanksu all. I should also mention that I get horrendously stinky feet...I like the sound of that "antibacterial footbed" on Keen shoes, but what can I do for shoes I already have?
