I bought this computer built by another person on a different forum. Has worked since then and i just decided to switch cases. Num lock wasnt on, Model number is ST3300831A. That will help. I'll try both on cable select. Thanks so much for your time and help.

Have them both on cable select, still same situation. What would you guess was different before when it would boot? It does not make any sense to me. I didn't do anything different than how it was setup before. I'm dumbfounded.

EDIT-

I tried having only the 40 gig on the ribbon, both on CS, the 40 on the master end of the ribbon, and it booted. What is the 300 gig drive causing it to not boot?

No, I think what you meant to say is that you are trying to bear with me:) I can't tell you how much i appreciate this, you are a great guy for doing this kind of stuff. This is just terribly odd.

well, here's the spec sheet on the 40GB http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bi...XJjaF90ZXh0PVdENDAwQkI*&p_li=&p_topview=1
verify the jumers are right.
and here's the spec sheet on the 300GB
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/in...4090aRCRD&locale=en-US
and here's the jumper sheet for their drives, just to reverify http://seagate.custhelp.com/cg...cmNoX3RleHQ9anVtcGVycw**&p_li=&p_topview=1
okay, could you do a test get http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and burn it to a cd, and reboot the system with just the 300GB hooked up. run the HDD diagnostics on the cd and see what it says about the drive. I'm wondering if it's one of those bum drives seagate put out not to long ago.

well, I always double check, assuming it's fine and knowing it's fine are 2 different things, I'd run the test to be sure, it should not take that long to do. do a physical inspection of the drive.
so, with just the 40GB you can boot into windows fine, correct?

Yes, i have the jumper on cable select, and it's on the end master plug. It boots just fine when the 300 isn't in also.

I have the diagnostic running, which one shall choose?

EDIT-
I ran the short test and all it says is PASSED 12/1/2007 @ 15:17.56

I'll run the long test and see what it says. I'll edit this post with the results of that.

SeaTools for DOS (Seagate/Maxtor). any issues at all will need to be noted. I gather you have a 2nd pc to use while you run the diagnostic right?

Long test complete.

LBA 586065920
Read Scan PASSED on 12/1/2007 @ 17:30.20

So that means its totally working and functional?

I'll leave the page open on my screen in case you need any other info that i might not be seeing.

The LBA 586065920 was just the number of sectors that HDD had. It counted all the way up during the test, ending at that as the last LBA. Showing that it was complete.

well, I was going off what the manual states. it said if it lists an LBA, then there is an issue with the drive.

Like in the pre-test analysis, it said, drive has 586065920 sectors. Then as the test went on, it counted the sectors as they were tested, ultimately ending in the last sector 586065920. This was listed above the Test Passed message, in the test stage.

okay, since you can boot up with just the 40gb hooked to the ide cable, do that and leave the power as the only thing connected to the 300GB drive. when you get logged in go to http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php and install PC Wizard. from it post the temp and voltages if you would please.

okay, the processor fan is not showing up. the voltages are lower than I expected. 107 on core 2 of the processor is a bit high for no load. I am wondering if it's a power issue, getting indications it is, do you have a multimeter?

In what way would it be a power issue? Just curious as to what you are thinking. I've tried different power cords for each hard drive. It will boot with either connector attached.

As for the multimeter, i believe i probably do.
