So does HD-DVD not require HDCP or any of that other baloney? And will HD-DVD still function over Component? How about S-video/composite?

No - at this point no disc makers have implemented HDCP. HD-DVD will work over component, but neither S-Video nor composite are HD-capable.

So technically I could play HD-DVDs via Component on my SDTV?

Yes, though I'd be hard-pressed to see the advantage over DVD on an SDTV.

I just received mine from Amazon today - I will plug it in tonight. FYI, I pre-ordered on Nov 5 and still received the King Kong disc (there was a whole hullabaloo on Amazon as to who would and would not receive it, depending on when they had ordered).

I'm not expecting the King Kong dvd since I ordered it on the 8th. It'll be nice if it does come though.

Yes, it does. You have to download unofficial drivers and buy decoder software that supports HDDVD, but it works fine on XP.

I read somewhere that it is confirmed to work with WinXP and Vista. You'll need some unofficial drivers under XP but not under Vista. You will also need a 3rd party hd-dvd capable software such as the recently released WinDVD 8. Works under OSX too but no software yet to play the disc.

So $200 for hd-dvd on your PC or HTPC is damn good deal considering the stand alone units are $400+. The 1080p capable ones are going for $1000.

Wow, the HDDVD drive is bigger then I imagined it would be.

edit: The menus being available while the video is playing is a nifty thing, but more then that I like the PIP video commentary! I'm the one who almost always listens to the directors and actors commentary track, and there are some I'd love to see video of.

Yes but you have to use the VGA cables. Won't upconvert over component because of MPAA/DVD consortium rules.
What about HDMI? I thought the HD-DVD add-on had HDMI.

impossible really, since the HD-DVD drive is simply a 5.25inch drive in a case with a mini IDE connector.

all it does is read info from the disc. the 360 (i presume xenos does this) does all the work from then on. when/if the 360 ever gets HDMI, then yes you will have HDMI, but for now its component or VGA

I got mine last week but had to drive to get it. Batman Begins is worth getting. Anyone else get any other movie?

Would that by any chance be the 34XBR960? Otherwise known as the holy grail of HDTVs (at least back in its day).

My mom has one of those. Definitely a nice set, but now that I'm used to a 50" DLP it looks awfully small to me. Also, it weighs 225 pounds!

No, not a Sony. It's a Toshiba CW34XC2 (otherwise known as the CW34X92 in the US). The footprint is huge, and it weighs something like 200 lbs, but the picture is damn nice. I may not get the full 1920x1080 resolution of today's LCDs, but I have superior black levels, contrast, and colours IMO. Furthermore, it doesn't suck on analogue cable. Every single LCD and plasma I've tried sucks royally with analogue SD cable. I'm not a big fan of DLPs either, or at least not the ones I tried up to last year. I didn't appreciate the video lag, and I didn't like the rainbow effect I sometimes saw.

I will probably get a 46" LCD when I move into a bigger house though. By that time HDCP handshaking will be more reliable, HDMI 1.3 will be common, and 1080p won't be horrendously expensive in a namebrand set.
