got my samsung 171p...

i know that this is my first post... but i just had to put in my input in on the sammie 171p, since no one here has one yet

i've got three words for you: holy fu@king sh!t.

i've had mine for about a week and damn this monitor is SWEET!!! i love this thing

best monitor i've seen yet... i can't even look at my crt anymore...

the image quality on this monitor is so high, colors/graphics/text are just amazing... windows xp looks incredible on this monitor (make sure you set your fonts to clear-type on this baby!!!)

this monitor is so bright and the colors jump right off the screen... on my crt, a white screen looks beige compared to the samsung

let's just say i've never seen a monitor this beautiful at 1280x1024 resolution

but what everyone wants to know is: Is this monitor for gaming?? c'mon guys, y'all know that NO lcd is for gaming, well not yet anyways...

BUT games still do run great on this baby... i've been playing Medal of Honor and Jedi Knight and they look incredible, color is amazing and graphics are sharp... i've seen details in Medal of Honor that i've never seen on my crt.

is there ghosting?? ghosting is minimal, there is no "dramatic ghosting" but there is a slight (and i mean slight) blur when playing games... but you have to keep in mind that this is STILL an lcd, where the signal response time maybe <25ms... BUT there still is a "measurable" response time whereas with crt's, the signal is sent instantaneously.

the only game that i really noticed that there was a huge difference between crt vs. lcd was nhl2002... that game definitely looks better on the crt.

bottom line is: if you're not a gamer... what are you waiting for??? go get this monitor!!! this monitor will be the best investment you'll ever make for your computer, period.

if you are a gamer... this monitor is STILL an excellent choice, but if you are a serious computer nerd and truly believe that FPS is what makes the world go round, then forget it, go spend your bank account on a sony fw900 or f520

but if you're an avid gamer, like me, then here's an option for you...

i've got this bad boy hooked up to a geforce4 ti4400 which has dual monitor capabilities, so i've got my crt (sony 19") hooked up to it as well (you can also do this with the ati radeon 8500)...

i have the crt set as the primary monitor (where i play all my games or watch movies) and the sammie as my secondary monitor (where i surf/email/icq etc...) all simutaneously!!

so needless to say... i've got the best of both worlds that an lcd and a crt have to offer... didn't sacrifice anything (well except for maybe a grand, but hell, i'm happy!!!)... yeah baby!!!

Thanks for your input on the 171P! I'm one of the guys waiting on what people have to say about them. Anyway I'm looking at getting the 151P just because I dont have the grand for one🙂 I will be using it to do video editing and some gameing. All I ever play now is Diablo2 LOD... do you have this game? How does the monitor scale down?? Does it still look good with a slower game like Diablo2 running at 800X600? I have to order one in the next day or two because I'm making a system for my mother n law and will be giving her the wifes old 17" CRT and the wife will be getting my 19" CRT.

I may play a game like MOH down the road but I like you dont care if it ghosts a little. Have you played any racing games yet? Thanks for your input on this LCD.

yes i do have diablo II LOD and i have tried it on the 171p, and well is looks like errr... diablo... heh the graphics in diablo are quite crappy anyways, even @ 800x600 res, but it does look good, no ghosting at all...

the monitor scales down by itself, you don't have manually do it before you play the game like on other crappy lcd's that i've used

slower games like diabloII, black & white and especially dungeon siege (get this game if you like diablo... oh my!!!) look sweet on this monitor, no ghosting at all... you'll have to look real, real close to see if there is any...

i'm sure it'll look real nice on your 151p

as for racing games... haven't had a chance to install any yet... i'll have to get back to you on that.

🙂

jiggler,
what about DVD's????

I'm not a hardcore gamer. Actually, I only play two games (Max Payne, Foresaken)

But I do plan on watchin some DVD's on it.

How well does it do with DVD's????

Please post...

Thanks,

Miguel

quake 3?? again, games like this, wolfenstein, medal of honor... there is a slight blur when moving around... it's so slight that my friends don't even notice it when they're playing on the samsung... but since i do have a dual monitor set up, i'll play quake 3 on the sam and then switch over to the Sony (crt)... and there is a difference... crt is definitely a gamers monitor... enough said, period.

dvd's?? dvd's actually look really good on this monitor, but then again it also depends on how good your dvd player (software/hardware)/video card is... but to answer your question, dvd's actually look better on the samsung than my crt because the color is just so much better on the sam

hope this helps 🙂

Thanks,
I want one! 🙂
Where did you end up getting it??
I found one place that has it IN STOCK but it's over $1000

The lowest price I'[ve found is $899, but NOT in stock.

i got mine at monitor outlet... shipping included, for $959

let me just say that i called them and put in my order on a tuesday afternoon... and it was on my doorstep on wednesday @11:00am!!! and i didn't even ask them to send it overnight... i pretty much sh!t my pants... heh, i should have asked them how i got it so fast, but didn't bother, too excited to hook this mother up

these guys are based in FL and i live in NY... go figure... but anyways these guys ROCK!!!
not to mention, they were the first ones to get this monitor in stock... and they're VERY personable

dunno if they got this one in stock though... good luck

oh man, that sucks.
I'm in FL so I can't buy from them. I'll get charged tax. heh
I guess I gotta wait for J&R to get it.

Jiggler, have u ever considered to purchase the Samsung 181t?
171p and 181t, the price difference is extremely minimal and both of them have very high specifications such as 500:1 contrast ratio.
I am actually considering the 181t one but no porsche design thou...

hell yeah i considered the 181t up until i heard it got some horrid reviews... which isn't really characteristic of samsung, however the 171mp wasn't highly regarded either...

but the main reason why i decided on the 171p was because of its great specs (500:1 contrast ratio - bright as hell, 0.264mm pixel pitch - sharp as hell, 170 degree viewing angle - which btw you can truly see this monitor at any angle, and the digital input - wanted to take advantage of my DVI out so i could see in pure digital baby!!!) i also have an HP 15" lcd which really kicked the hell out of my Sony 19"crt (image quality-wise) so i knew i had to get the 171p... and now i gots no regrets because the 171p kicks the living hell out of my 15"lcd !!!

--

as for the 151p, it does basically have the same specs, but i didn't want to get it because it's pixel pitch is at 0.297mm whereas the 171p is at 0.264mm... on top of that, a 17" lcd is a monster compared to a 15"lcd... no thanks, gimmie the 171p thank you!!! it's definitely worth the extra dough!!!

regards 🙂

Pixel pitch on LCD's are completely different from CRT's. The pixel pitch on LCD's of a given native resolution (say 1280x1024) and size (say 17") are EXACTLY the same. Every single 15" 1024x768 LCD will have .297mm dot pitch. Every single 17" 1280x1024 LCD will have .264mm dot pitch. Every single 19" 1280x1024 LCD will have .294mm dot pitch. Every single 20" 1600x1200 LCD will have .255mm dot pitch. Etc, etc.

BTW, you can get the 19" 1280x1024 Sceptre X9G with the same specs as the Samsung:

250 nits brightness
500:1 contrast
25ms total average response time
170 degree viewing angle
VGA + DVI
USB + Audio

For just $869.95 plus shipping from justdeals.

I just ordered a new 2.4MGz P4 and the 171P is next on the list! What are the width and height of this monitor? Also, how high is the top of the monitor above the desktop?
Thanx
Dan

tsdible,
same here.

Can't decide between the two.

The only thing that does concern me is the .28 dot pitch of the 181T.

But the reviews on it ARE positive. none are negative. There are only 2 pro reviews.

pookie... do you have some links to some of those reviews... I have seen a couple, but I want to make sure I get them all. 🙂 Maybe I'm missing something.

don't worry about pixel pitch, go for the 18 - bigger is better. There is no substitue for screen real estate (in apps anyway).
