I recently attended a internal seminar about how to deal with 20 somethings.

The jist of it was they simply must have reassurance and constant feedback and stroking in order to perform otherwise they just sit and mope. Thanks OP for confirming what we already know.
Did they use the term "brodate"?

3 out of 5 is VERY GOOD. 4 means you're ABOVE AND BEYOND. Only a few people should be getting this. 5 is reserved for the next Jack Welch.

You are reading waaay into it. I am instructed by HR to only give out 4s to the top of the top of the top. In fact, i haven't given out a 4 ever.

Its the same where I work as well. Everybody who does their job well gets threes. Maybe one person every five years in a company of 300+ employees sets a 4 & nobody ever gets a 5.

yeah, whats the story with the 5? my boss said something about its almost impossible to reach or something. he then told me some story about the navy and how they almost never give out 5s etcc.

Think of it this way... A 5 is the absolute best anyone can be. Albert Einstein was a 5, Mother Theresa was a 5, Muhammad Ali was a 5... Are you really a 5? That leaves you 4 stars to work with; that's what all us mortals get. Are you the best of the mortals? A 4 is someone who's gone above and beyond for years. One of the best the industry has to offer. They make game changing decisions that save the company time and money. They're the thinkers and engineers who change the way the game's played. Is that you? If not, you're probably a 3 or less. A 3's a very good score, and shows that you go beyond the average, and do better than someone who "does his job" :^)

i think i should have been giving a 3 for my own work alone, plus an extra point for all the help i have provided other depts. oh well, ill just lay off doing all the extra crap i was doing. it clearly hasn't done me any good.

Also - dirty little secret - we fit all reviews to a bell curve, on purpose. You getting a 3 out of 5 means you're doing your job as expected, but are not exceeding. The exceeds people are ones we want to promote to continue building our castle, basically we want a severe show of loyalty to get anything other than a 3. Use this knowledge to further your career.

I can see that. The schools have taught people are all 5s no matter what so if you get a 3 you must really suck.

My biggest annoyance is that at my last two jobs we write our own reviews of ourselves and compare to the managers review. I always have a hard time figuring out if they are a 'give everyone a 4 or 5' type of person or a 'only 2 people in the department g 4s, most get a 3' person.

I have no problem with either I just don't want to shoot myself in the foot in terms of performance raises

More on topic - you apparently made a lot of money in overtime and like your job = be happy. You are already ahead of most people!

3 is generally regarded as doing what you need to do and slightly more. "Fully Successful".
4 is generally regarded as doing far beyond the expectations of the supervisor. "Commendable".

5 is generally regarded as far exceeding the expectations of the supervisor and goals of the division "Outstanding".

Basically, getting a 4 means you are gonna get a raise or promotion.

Getting a 5 means you are gonna get a raise/promotion and nice bonus.
