...$300 bucks?

That can't be right, can it? Sure can, if you wouldn't be caught up in all of the eee pc/msi wind netbook hype you'd realize that you can find 3-4 year old laptops on ebay/craigslist with better specs(assuming you were aiming for the 10" netbooks) and for cheaper.

Scan your local ad's for these laptops, they all have 10.6" screens with 1ghz pentium m cpu's.
Fujitsu lifebook p5010/p5020 and the better/pricier 7210/p7230
Averatec 1000/1100/1400

Used, no warranty, with 4-year-old HD, screen and battery. It's certainly an option though.

Dell will also sell you a Latitude D610 for $350-400 with 1.6 - 2 GHz pentium M (Dell Financial Services, 100-day warranty), but it's a 5-lb monster twice the size of a netbook.

Not to mention the lunacy of telling people that they are idiots for buying what suits their needs.

I've thought about picking up an older 10-12" laptop, but once you factor in the cost of a new battery (which is usually necessary), that negates some of the savings.

Still waiting for a small travel book that has a built in eSATA port. :)

With all the new books having SATA HDDs, why is this so difficult? Asus has one, but only on a monster book - no good for travel.

^ good point. there are a lot of enclosures now with eSATA, that would work for both extra storage and for a DVD drive.

I blame the old 945 chipset intel is dumping on the netbook makers. For no specific reason, just because :)

How much do these weigh? One of the major things about the netbooks is the 2 pound weight. There is no way I'd travel/hike around with a 4-5 pound laptop in my bag.

Meh, the Aspire One I just bought has 3x the storage space, is 1 inch shorter on both sides, and 40% lighter than any of those laptops. And I got it for well under $300.

Lets at least compare apples to apples here, the cheapest 10" msi wind is $500 at newegg and the eee pc 1000 is $669 and none have a dvd drive.
If i wanted an 8.9" laptop i would of gone with the lifebook p1120 which i found for $200 in some places but that one doesnt have a dvd drive like i needed.

Believe it or not, some people don't care about a built-in DVD player and slightly larger screen. It's great that you found something that fits your needs, but a lot of people would rather buy new and get a good warranty, even if it means spending a bit more and/or getting lower specs. Don't know why you feel the need to bash them, it's not like their decision is "wrong," they're just buying based on different priorities than you.

Also, P1120 is very underpowered. 800MHz Transmeta may be fine for basic web browsing, but can it handle YouTube videos and other flash content?

Anyways, the $400 Acer Aspire One is a great deal IMO.

Shabby reread your own OP and think about the attitude your text implies. Tone is not deliverable over the internet, so you have to infer it from diction.

some people would rather spend more on new parts that aren't about to break. most laptops dont last much longer then 3-4 years.

espcially the lcd screen
