I'm encoding a video with handbrake, chatting on the internet, doing a 300 megs of files copying, and I have the gimp in the background running :)

Smile!

I got a scratch and dent from dell for 249$, and so far the only scratch or dent I can find is the windows license sticker is slightly rubbed off in one tiny part :p

Athlon 64x2 3800, 1gig of ram, inspiron desktop. . .(already got rid of vista and went back to xp). . .

I only get a computer every 3-4 years. I've been running an athlon xp 2800 system that was dog slow video encoding even with 1.5 gigs of ram (non - dual channel of course). . .

So this seems like a quad core to me :p

Same here except I'm running an Athlon 64 3400. Of course, I'm typing this on a Celeron M Toshiba laptop running WinXP, 1GB of RAM and cheap video hardware with zero onboard video memory.

BTW-This is Off Topic, not General Hardware. ;)

Actually the windows license sticker is slightly rubbed off on ALL machines to reveal that metallic strip underneath the sticker to prove it's genuine. so you scratch and dent deal actually has no scratches :D

With four banks full of 64MB DIMMs each? How about a pair of 128MB video cards in SLI? Don't forget to RAID-0 some 10GB hard drives for maximum performance.

Feels good to have a "working" computer, doesn't it? No more headaches with performance...yay for progress!

I remember how stoked I was to get my dual core laptop. I noticed no performance drop transitioning to it from my x2 4800+ rig.

Congrats man.

Now comes the headache of moving all the data. I just moved my 19 gigs of fam pics. I bought an external enclosure to use with an 80 gig drive I had laying around for backups. . .

I don't really notice a huge performance increase with my Dell Latitude D630 (C2D 7300/2.0) but then again my most demanding application is probably Skype or Trillian ;)

What were you using before if you don't mind me asking? I don't do anything really demanding aside from making DVD movies from my DV cam and ripping audio CDs. No gaming until Spore comes out.

Dell Inspiron 700m (1.6 GHz) which was fast enough for my most common applications, Opera, Skype, Trillian and NotePad! But the laptop was ancient (at least according to AT standards) I got it during the infamous Dell $750 off $1499 coupon two years ago. Does anyone else miss that?

  • Dell Latitude D630
  • Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 (2.00GHz 800MHz 4MB L2 Cache)
  • 14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ (1400x900)
  • 512MB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 1 DIMM
  • Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
  • 120GB Hard Drive 9.5MM 5400RPM
  • Microsoft Vista Business
  • Dell Wireless 360 VSTA Bluetooth Module for Vista Latitude
  • 65W AC Adapter for Latitude D-Family
  • 8X DVD+/-RW w/ Roxio Creator and Cyberlink for Vista Basic/Business
  • Intel 4965 WLAN (802.11a/g/n) mini Card Latitude
  • 9-Cell/85 WHr Primary Battery
  • GOLD TECH Support for 3 years
  • CompleteCare Accidental Damage Service for 3 years
  • RossMAN discount

Guess how much I paid for the above laptop?
