Just to demonstrate the difference a CP can make, check out the two images of the same scene. The only difference was i rotated the CP for the second image.

The only thing I don't like about this and photo editing in general is that it is NOT what I would see if I was standing there. Unless I was wearing a pair of polarized shades

I had an Hoya MRC w/ my old 18-70 kit lens, and while it was great, since it was so dark it added a cast over all the images. I wouldnt say it muddied them up, it just make the shadows dissappear and i had to compensate more. This new B+W CP is much lighter, so it has the same effect that the other CP did, w/o drowning out all the shadows.

While i agree, photography isn't always meant to be a perfect rendition of an actual place. At some point, art and photography mix.

Actually, only one side of it is. The other side got crap bombed by an angry bird. Guess i took too many pics of them.
 
how do you like the 18-200vr? think I will get one for my Alaska cruise in May 06. where did you get it, most places want full street price (~$799) for it.
 
I'm surprised you had problems with they Hoya, they make great glass but VERY POOR mounts. Their SMC filters have one of the best coatings on the market, but are also very tough to clean. I do like B+W for their quality, but also worry about screwing a brass ring into a plastic filter thread. Independant tests show them to be no better than Hoya optically, but there alot better built.

Rodenstock is pretty good, espically their UV-IR Cut (gentle hot mirror) but very fragile...If you look at the thing wrong it may shatter. I don't use UV's for protection but find that the UV-IR cut gives me a touch more sharpness when shooting in IR saturated conditions.

I've been playing with regualar linear pol's as their much more effective on digital. Havn't had any major issues with AF or Metering, but i usually shoot manual anyways. Stack two of them and you've got a nice 4ish-23stop ND variable ND filter.
 
Polarization makes a huge difference for water / sky shots. Can't say I've seen any other spots where it matters to me. Like the comparison shot.

helps cut through the glare in glass as well....

Look into someones car while wearing polarizing sunglasses, then take them off... HUGE difference....

The only downside to the 18-200vr is the bokeh isnt as "pretty" as my other lenses... Sometimes you notice it, sometimes you don't... Unfortunately w/ that image, you notice it.
