So i desided to beuild a very cheap sorta old comp for no reason what so ever.

Specs are:

Athlon Xp 1700+ polomino (spelling)
MSI k7n2
Dual channell ddr 400 512 mg
chepo psu and case
60 gig old hdd
fx5200

darn this thing runs hot. well this is the most biggest combination of hot componets, the 5200 is pasively cooled and it does not help it the fact that i cut down the heatsink, the athlon is one hot chip and the hdd is the hotest one i have got. Plus the case is a small form fator atx with no case fans.

I wonder how long this thing will last.

Oh and it makes a nice leg warmer. Anyone have any ideas what i can do to this comp besides destroying it.

Overclock the hell out of it, of course!

Actually I did almost the exact same thing as you a couple weeks ago... I put together a total POS Athlon XP system out of parts I had lying around:

AXP Barton 2800+
ASRock K7S41GX mobo (micro ATX! looks totally retarded in my mid tower case)
Kingmax 512MB PC3200
eVGA GeForce 4000 MX (utter crap, but better than mobo onboard video)
Samsung 80GB IDE drive
AOpen 32x CDROM (8 years old!)
No-brand mid tower case (as sturdy as a tin can) with no-brand 400W PSU (yeah right)
Zalman CNPS7000 Cu-Al cooler

Stock on my Barton chip is 2.083 GHz at a FSB of 166... I clocked FSB up to 192 for a nice round figure of 2.4 GHz. The ASRock board maxes out at "+6%" volts (wtf?) so I cranked those up too. Box is rock solid stable, no problems at all, and terrific performance. In fact it's actually faster on several tasks than one of my low end A64 boxes. CPU temps are a very reasonable 44C (I think that Zalman fan helps a good deal)

So for a $300 pile of junk I could not be happier!

Have you tried OCing your Palomino chip? What kind of temps are you getting? (Just install Everest or MBM if you don't know). It's possible you may actually get a decent life out of the box, the heat may just be from your crapola case and PSU... mine is like that too.

And if you still need something to do with that box just check out the Distributed Computing forum here. We can always use the help on SETI, or biochemistry, or predicting global warming

Cheers, have fun, :)

I have an old Athlon XP1700+ box which I use for downloading stuff, running my FTP on and storing files away from my main rig.

Its stuck in the spare room and I control it via VNC. Does the job nicely.

I've been running my XP 1700+ Palomino for nearly five years now, the last two years, 24/7.

Sure, it runs with a high vcore & runs hot, but it's a rock, never unstable :)

This with an ECS K7S5A Pro.

Palomino was a super hot CPU core; you can find a TBred A or B 1700+ for dirt cheap, and that should cut the temps dramatically (and give you some o/c room).

I havent instaled windows on it yet, last thing which happened is that it gave me disc error while copying files, and then the gfc card went bye bye, so i will have to get a new one :p, prolly will get a fx5200 dirt cheap from local comp shop.

Havent tryed overclocking but from what i've seen 56C in bios it runs really hot, but then again its the amd stock little cooler.

This is my first build of athlon xp, and i had a pentium 4 1.7ghz before and that thing ran cold, but in terms of performance this thing would eat it alive i think.

i think u missunderstand the idea of a leg warmer pc :p, the original pc which was a leg warmer was a 2.4ghz celeron d, at least this athlon does not burn ur legs when u put them on top of the case. :p

Why are these POS? I just built one for my kids like this and it ROCKS for the money.
Sempron 2800 w/ biostar board $94.00 CompUSA combo
512 meg ram $34.00 AR
160 gig WD $29.00 AR
Used 9800 PRO 128 meg $74.00 Ebay includes shipping
used box $0.00
Used CD NO rw $0.00
Used floppy $0.00

$231.00 for a machine that runs great and will play anything out there @ 1280*1024 with med to high settings.
I do need more ram its fun and Best of all my main system is now kid/Wife free. LOL

Since everyone is on the bragging scheme... xP

AMD 64 2800 - Free
NForce3-A - 20$ (sold the sempron 2800 for 60$, and the total combo was 80$)
2 x 512 Mushkin PC3200 - 70$ a long time ago...
16X Dual DVD Burner - 40$
WD 160 Gig HD - 5$
eVGA 6600GT AGP - 25$
Case and fans - 50$

Not bad for a 210$ machine. Btw, this overclocks to 285 with a 5/6 mem divider. Also, these were all purchased NEW!!

That's a pretty kick-ass system for the kids. Mine have a P3 1 GHz + Ti4200, and a Duron 1.7 GHz Applegate witha Radeon 7000.

My main system is a 2800+ Sempron! (overclocked, though).

Oh, I guess I should have been more specific. My AXP box doesn't run like a POS but it sure looks like one! It's the ugliest box I've ever made. The overall look of the case is horrible and cheap, and I made it worse with a non-matching CD-ROM bezel and the wrong motherboard form factor. It's such a contrast to my sleek internally lit liquid cooled gaming rig. But hey, I had the parts lying around. No sense in just letting them gather dust!

I enjoy reading everyone else's "budget builds" here too! I know AnandTech is all about the latest greatest technology but these cheapo rigs really embody the DIY hardware enthusiast spirit.

PS: xSeongminx - how on earth did you get a 160GB HDD for $5?

My mother is using my old rig: Barton M (underclock to 1.75Ghz@1.3v) pretty cool running. Has Win Xp on it, she uses for surfing, lookup stuff on encyclopedia, learning typing etc. Not heavy usage but more than her needs. I love it fit it with 1/2 GB DDR333/17" LCD/60GB HD, wireless connection to my 54Gv4 router and it turns on faster than my main rig with all the junk loaded. I sometimes turn to it for a quick use of the browser and stuff. Very handy and it runs very cool on an older 300W PS.

Being passively cooled doesn't affect the heat output of a device...
BTW, athlon xps aren't that hot under load, it's just they don't really have any kind of throttling capability so they're always near their max temp.

Update: Changed mainboards in my second comp to a pci express with onboard video (6150, which is not too bad, when next gen gfx comes out 7800gt will go into second comp, while new one will go into my main one) so now i have my 6200 agp sittin there ready to go into my athlon xp comp. So when i get back from work i'll fire it up and see if it works :p

Oh and i bought a chepo case but prolly will do some modding and spray painting to make it look more ghetto. Case I bought

Being passively cooled doesn't affect the heat output of a device...

No but it affects how much heat ends up being in the same place and does not help the card keep cool. :p

Edit: spelling

Well its a pc designed to be like a leg rest, go on the net and act like a small internet router and comes with heating so u have a functional warn leg rest :p
In other words it does not serve any particular important use

Yep, Palominos run hot. I still have a 1600+ that's chugging along in an ECS K7S5A which just died. The caps on that thing were leaking all over the place.
