So the company I work for is having a boat cruise and I was planning on going with my camera and getting some shots. The HR person just approached me and said they would pay me $250 to take some candid shots and for ~30 minutes of portrait shots. This will probably be at night and the only issue I foresee is lighting problems. I don't have an external flash. Although she did say that they weren't expecting anything super professional.

I was thinking about buying a flash for the event since I would be getting paid for it. It would make my shots come out that much better plus the money I get for the event would almost pay for it.

1) You'll need a flash.
2) It's "cruise".

3) Grats and good luck!

I knew the word looked off but it passed my spell check! :)

Yeah I figured I might need one. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm about to go look into them now.

I think you mean Tamron 28-75.

I would suggest a flash and bounce the light when possible. A Canon 430EX should do, but it'll eat up all the cash you'll make. Bring some back-up batteries for both camera and flash.

Ditto the Gary Fong Lightsphere. I attended a fund raising dinner thuis week, and the pro photog was using exactly that on his Nikon digital. I observed many of the results and was impressed.
