Got my first Mac today...

Mac Mini.

Hooked up with my PC though a KVM, kind of.

I got the base model for $549 (student discount). Coming soon in the mail is 4 gb of DDR3 memory and a 500 gb 7200 RPM hard drive (yes, it's a laptop drive).

I've got the Mini hooked up to my 20" Dell monitor via DVI and my 17" Samsung via VGA. My PC is hooked up to the 20" via VGA and the 17" via DVI. I have buttons on the monitors to switch between the two. As for the mouse and keyboard, they're connected to a Belkin KVM, although I'm not using the "Video" part of the acronym "KVM" in this case. I connected the audio line-out from my Mac Mini into my PC's line-in, then my PC's sound card handles the audio from there.

I'm in the middle of setting up all my music stuff. I'm moving my iTunes stuff over to my Mini so I can start syncing my iPhone to it as opposed to my PC. I'm currently downloading and installing patches for Sibelius (music notation software) as I write this. My audio programs are going to suck until I get my upgrades installed, LOL!

Office 2008 is installed and ready to go. Before anyone tells me that iWork is better, you must understand that I get Microsoft software for PRACTICALLY free. I'm not supposed to say how much I can buy it for as a faculty member at my university, but trust me, it's stupid not to buy it. I don't know about iWork though; I didn't see it on the list.

Other than that, I haven't really done much with it yet. If anyone has any questions, let me know!

EDIT: To clarify - both my PC and my Mac Mini are using BOTH SCREENS at the same time, spanning across both screens.

Anyone telling you iWork is better is just puffing the Apple product. MS Office is still much better, at least in my opinion. I do like the 2007 interface on the PC, but that sort of goes against every Mac UI convention, so I understand why it's not in 2008.

Word 2008 is nice, though. I'm pretty sure you can sync lecture recordings w/ your notes in notebook view.

how are you able to get the Mini to use both the DVI and VGA connectors at once?
edit: heh, nevermind. I see that the NEW mac mini's have both mini-dvi and mini-displayport outputs. It'd be nice to know if you can somehow do dual dvi outputs...

I am pretty sure that you can, I think that in the OP's position though he wanted each system hooked up using 1 DVI and 1 VGA.

Apple sells Mini-DP to DVI adapters, so you can do dual DVI, I would assume. OP just did it differently probably because he had different adapters on hand and was bound to one VGA and one DVI on his PC.

^^ You are 100% correct. I'm just using what I had on-hand to keep it cheap.

I'm on it now 😉
