Got my feet wet with multiplayer gaming, now need more

I haven't played any multiplayer FPS in a looong time, I have been reluctant to start anything in fear that I would suck. Just for fun I started playing Battlefield Heroes, and have been enjoying it, not brutally difficult, can usually get 1.5:1 or 2:1.

But BF:H is just to limited, and I think the regular BF is dated and probably more difficult... so I was thinking TF2 my question is:

How hard is it to play just by jumping into any random server and blasting away? How steep is the learning curve for the easiest class? Basically is it casual enough so i wouldn't have to spend tons of time learning all the tricks and strategies and still get a respectable ratio?

Anyone played both games? How is the difficulty compared?

some classes are very simple - Heavy, soldier, Pyro. some more difficult - spy, Sniper, Demo. But, no matter which class you choose, you'll have a blast. Keep and eye out for AT Fight Nights. A bunch of us ATers get together (usually on a Thursday night) to play. ViviMage just built a new server for it. Look for the thread.

tf2 isn't very fun in my opinion
Cod4 though, I got yesterday and its real good... Not sure how well it runs on older systems though, not knowing your specs.
I would say cod4 is the best FPS i have ever played!

TF2 is easily the best multiplayer shooter right now. There's so much awesome stuff in it. It keeps track of all kinds of stats(hours of play for each class, which class you got the most points with, etc..), it tells you when you break your own records, it gives you tips during loading screens. All of the characters actually have personality, unlike every other shooter out there. The animations are very cartoony, it all comes together very nicely. All of the classes are very different, they all serve various and important roles. The default maps are so great that you don't even need to custom content at all, but good custom content still exists.

It's very easy to get into and have a blast. If becoming extremely good is something you're looking at, there is a huge competitive TF2 scene. If you just want to play for fun, there's way more than enough casual servers with players of all skill levels to play in.

These videos are quite humorous:

CoD4 is so boring. It's a nade fest.

TF2 is awesome. It's a true team game. If your team sucks then you will not win.

So are there still a lot of folks playing TF2? I was playing MMO's for a while so I totally missed playing this.

I am definitely thinking about getting the orange box... finally... but it would definitely be for TF2 more than anything else.

I am kinda up in the air over TF2 vs. L4D... which one to get?

TF2 is probably the 2nd most popular fps next to Counter Strike. You'll always have people to play with in all game modes at all hours of the day. TF2 is so much better than Left 4 Dead it's ridiculous.

I found TF2 to have a very steep learning curve. Maybe it's just coming from having played a lot of Battlefield 2 and TF2 being very different. I was particularly frustrated by being killed by spies all the time. That's up there with invisble snipers in my book of bad ideas.

I shall never understand the popularity of Counterstrike. It's not THAT great a game, and so unforgiving, watching everyone else play for 5 minutes after you die early. I was always more fond of its spotty little cousin Tactical Ops, back in the day.

So are there any in-game tutorials to play for TF2 or is it pretty much, "start swimming bitch!".

Come play TF2 with us on Thursday if you are available, that way you can play with some friendly people to start out. Well most of us are friendly; Howard is kind of a jerk. :D

Spies can be a killer if you are on an unbalanced team. I play with a couple of guys regularly that can completely decimate an entire team. However there is a solution: pyros. Two decent pyros can completely block the best spies. Whichever team is able to exploit the weaknesses of the other better will win. It is TEAM Fortress for a reason.

That being said, TF 2 is great for beginners. It's rare that you'll find people who will rag on you for not knowing what you're doing, unlike L4D. You can jump in, play as a soldier for a few rounds, and get at least a few kills to get your feet wet.

This seems like the appropriate thread to ask a question I have been curious about. Has anyone played Multi-player on either of the Rainbow 6 Vegas games? Is it any good? I love the feel and gameplay of single player in that game.

TF2 Rocks!! I enjoy playing all the classes instead of being a master at 1. Spies are a pain .. but if they get out of hand I go pyro. etc etc

Buy it!

I keep forgetting about AT Thursday nights .. have to join in the fun

That's the TF2 Wiki and it has brief overviews and strategies to start off on. You can also go to youtube and watch some stuff on there. The Wiki is really great though. I would read through it a little on every character.

I like COD4 a lot more than TF2, once you find a good server (No Martyr or Last Stand, no bunny hopping, no 'nade spamming, and admins to boot violators).

Well I purchased it, spent a few days playing and was sorely disappointed. Gameplay is very archaic, feels like i'm playing a shooter from 1999. It was fun back then, but it barely constitutes a modern multiplayer shooter imho. While the gameplay works just fine it's just plain boring.

I won't bother with cod4 looks like gameplay is similar to the older ones, I will have to look into Vegas2 or ARMA2. :/

You must be playing really sh!tty maps or with really sh!tty teams ixe.

Try playing on some crowded Goldrush or Badwater maps. Those two hooked me FOR LIFE. For regular CP maps, try Dustbowl.. Being on offense is hard as hell though..so I prefer pyro or demo camping on defense. ;)

Give it another chance and it will hook you.

It's not for everyone. Some people hate playing that type of team game. He should try CoD4 then since it's much more solo.

I tried TF2 and COD4. I am not that good at FPS, but I prefer COD4 to TF2. COD4 multiplayer is a lot like single player though, which is why I like it. A friend I play with really loves
TF2 though, so it depends on the person. TF2 is probably harder than COD4 in that you have a lot of different classes with different skills and such. I just like to get on COD4 and blast away.
I have to admit though that the grenade spamming is really annoying.

TF2 is beautiful but boring.

COD4, for all its consolitis, is probably the best action team shooter since RTCW:ET, which is still the best ever, imo.

Can't miss with Vegas 2 for only $8 shipped.

I'd read some reviews before I got ARMA 2. It's nothing like casual.

Despite the upgraded graphics in COD 4, it still felt a bit "old fashioned" to me just because there were always so many people squeezed in to such small maps.

I still think you might like Battlefield 2.. You can control the pace of the game a bit just by choosing a server with more or fewer people on it.
