Got some money to spend, and I've decided to upgrade my HP Pavillion with a decent system. Primary use: Gaming, Streaming, Plex Media, and more gaming. Here's what I've come up with so far. I want to build now for the future and not have to worry about upgrading for a long time. My friend is letting me borrow his MSI GTX 970 GPU so I don't need to pick one up any time soon. Plus $1200 is all I can spend at the moment. :\ Any issues with the following build? Thanks in advance!

Everything looks good. The PSU is overkill for your system, but gives you plenty of room in the future to add stuff, SLI cards, etc.

I have the 212 EVO on my son's system (the computer I passed down to him). It's pretty decent, but if you want a great cooler that is quiet as well, look at the Noctua ones. Plus, they are so easy to install and come with a fan MTBF 150,000. The 212 EVO has a sleeve-bearing fan rated for 40,000. I use the NH-U12S on my Skylake system and highly recommend it.

Lastly, did you pick that motherboard for the features, manufacturer, or for the style/colors? There are lot of good boards that perform just as well for less, but everybody has their brand loyalties and color preferences.

i would avoid the HDD altogether and get a second SSD. ofc that depends on how much of a data hoarder you are.

i agree that the asus is expensive, you could settle for a cheaper mobo and nothing would change.

the 212 EVO is fine; the noctua is 2x the price. (though, it's a great cooler)

i MUCH prefer my R5 to be without window - it makes the system so much more quiet. and the novelty of the window only lasts a few days, but silence lasts forever 🙂

The style and color did attract me to be honest. The features are ok. Can you recommend a better mobo for less? Thanks!

I think he recommended that ram because it has better timings and a lower CAS rating (14 compared to the 16 you listed).

As far as motherboards, just use Newegg and filter by socket, chipset, and then list by highest rating. There are at least 15 motherboards that have very good reviews and are cheaper ($149-$199 range). MSI Gaming Z170 M5, Asus Ranger, GA-Z170X-UD5, Asrock Z170 Extreme 7+, GIGABYTE G1 Gaming GA-Z170X-Gaming 5, etc.

Just remember, the features are mostly the same. Many times you are paying for the color and not the performance.

Awesome! Thank you. I will do just that!

Update: MSI MSI Gaming Z170A GAMING M5 LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard

I think it will serve you well.....not to mention it is $80 cheaper and you can put those funds towards another cool toy (I still highly recommend the Noctua NH-u12s cooler). It's nice and so easy to install (read the reviews of installing it vs the 212 EVO).

Yes, it costs more, but in my opinion, worth it.

Thank you! I think I'll be satisfied with my final build for years to come! Eventually I'll upgrade to a greater GPU! The items in bold are recommendations from everyone who posted. Thank you again all!🙂
