Why dont they release a 3400+ X2 at 1.8ghz to compete with ultra low prices of those crappy smithfields like the 805....

I mean they offer a 165 opteron, why not a 1.8ghz X2 variety....Make it a sub 200 dollar chip...

AM2 is no big deal....I see no benefit to jump sockets yet...



So what mobo do you have in your possession now to run this chip?

The problem is now that their isn't a single core equivalent of an theoretical Athlon 64x2 3400+, since AMD discontinued the 3000+.

Well considering the Opteron 165 was last seen at 278US, before AMD cranked the pricing higher, and now only makes it available through authorized distributer intending to sell it to people using it in a workstation, asking for a lower then 200US Dual Core from AMD is most likely gonna fall on deaf ears.

On the Opteron side there is a single core equivalent of the 165, the 144.

Hopefully Intel's Conroe will make AMD change their tune.

On AM2 it looks like AMD wants to start Dual Cores from 3800+ and go from there. With only 2 Models of Athlon 64's there it looks like AMD like Intel is looking to abandon Single Cores for the mainstream.

AM2 like has been stated is to shift over to DDR2 memory, to keep the AMD platform at good cost, as DDR production slows.
 
Well then drop it to 1.6ghz or get the dual core semprons out...

That POS 805 at a pathetic 2.66ghz and 533fsb is getting huge sales showing there is a market for low speed dual cores....
 
Do you have a motherboard for it yet? Don't suppose you could give us some details on the mounting, specifically, would a CPU water block like the Swiftech Apogee or Storm Rev2 be compatible?

I'm banking on the M2 to drop the 3800+ to ~$200. Otherwise I'd probably have picked the 805 up 🙂.

The POS 805 is also lowering Intel's margins, X2s are expensive to make and AMD is still capacity limited so making a huge high-demand part doesn't make much sense.

BUt remember...Intel is effectively using this to push dual cores into mainstream....If AMD could do that as welll and get rid of most of the single core line, capacity could be there...

I know many gamers would not like that, but the more dual cores are mainstream the more programmers will make their apps SMP aware....


I see your point, but I think they are moving away from a segment of users they normally had and the price points they usually had....

The thing is Intel is using the Pentium D 805 to move extra Smithfield inventory now that the Presler is out and they can use that for the bulk of thier sales. Intel wants to clear the way for things based on Core Architecture.

AMD is already shifting production to Dual Core, look at the Socket AM2, lineup only 2 models of Athlon 64 are Single Core, everything else is Dual Core if you include the FX 62 that makes for 8 Dual Cores vs 2 Single Cores at the normal energy models.

Of course they are moving away from the lower price segments, AMD is a corporation too that intends to make money, moving to the higher margin segments when you don't have great amounts of capacity like Intel does is a wise move.

From the looks of things Celerons and Semprons will remain Single Core for quite a while.
I bet your looking at mainstream transition to Quad Core before we see a Sempron Dual Core.

Pushing Dual Core has been Intels emphasis for the past while, and they have the massive capacity to do such a feat. Look at AMD most of their Dual Cores are close to double the equivalent Single Core, while for Intel now, with the Presler price drops a Single Core cost 85-90% as much as the equivalent Dual Core.
 
AMD has zero reason to bring out a very low cost dual core chip. Hell, they have no reason to bring out a low cost anything. AMD is cranking out CPU's at 150% capacity, why would they lower their prices? Everything AMD makes is sold out before it even goes into the box.

...and can't wait to see what happens when you get a motherboard for your new processor! Should be interesting.
