what's really amazing is that some will go on and on and never read the first page of the thread where if they did they would have known from the start.
I don't agree with all laws, especially vice ones (let me do what i want as long as it doesn't adversely affect anyone else), but DUI can and does kill. people get comfortable and think they can handle it and don't realize that their reaction time is all screwed.
there was an accident outside my office at around 2am 2 week ago that sent 2 people to the hospital, one with life theating injuries. one car ran a red light speeding and t-boned the other. that was loud as hell.
Sorry, I must have missed it... who here argued that DUI doesn't kill?
My argument is that the enforcement of the law in this case was excessive and selective, which has the effect of diluting the strength of the law.
And keep in mind, while drunk driving is a problem, less than half of all traffic fatalities are alcohol-related, and those that are not alcohol-related are rarely 'accidents,' but the direct result of someone's negligence. IOW, the same people who would wish the death penalty on the guy sleeping it off in his car are probably the same ones who think nothing of texting while driving, even though studies have proven conclusively that the level of impairment is the same.
edit: and don't even get me started on the large number of people on the road whose driving ability/skill even while sober is scarcely better than a drunk to begin with.
