Got machines back

You old timers remember when I had 2 of my computers stolen a couple of years ago and the guy was caught because he was logged into my ISP dialup account and was still on the internet when the cops knocked on his door?
Well I got the computers back yesterday after a 18 month fight with the distric atty, and the police chief, did not get back much, they were 2 celron 400A's which were the hot setup at that time with 64 megs ram and overclocked to the moon.
I plugged them in today and neither would boot, opend the cases and guess what, while the machines were in the impound at the police department the memory came up missing, wonder how that happend? I suppose it just rotted and turned into dust or maybe the memory mites ate it, keep those cases clean guys dont let this happen to your memory. Man that stuff was expensive then, and so were the Celrons.
These were great machines with big 2 gig hard drives. The HD's were a little pricey compared to now also. HEHE ! Junk now!

Just had to post this.

On a serious note, that doesn't speak well for the integrity of your particular police department, does it? I'm sure they're not all this way, but it seems that we hear way too many stories of stuff like this happening. 🙁

Anyway, hope you can get something useful going with them. Maybe set up a little Linux cluster or something for fun. 😎

Why did you have to fight with the district attorney to get your property back? That doesn't make sense to me. But, neither do lawyers so that isn't much of a surprise...

That is a pretty good question, I dont have a answer for you. It seems like this always happens here with evidence that has been taken, they forget who pays there way.
These were crunchers, they were doing nothing but RC5 at the time.
Relative to the intergrety of the PD here, the ex sheriff had taken 3 saddles out of the evidence lockup and was using them, when found out he just said "well I was storeing them, if you dont use them the leather just rots"
The guy that owned them had to sue to get them back, I dont understand any of it.
Bleep.

sad that things like this happen.Small town soggy?

our police force had its own pawn shop till they were investigated...

The good news is DC helped track down who stole your PCs. The bad news is the cops are crooks too. :|

Can't believe you would have to fight them to get your stuff back, only to find parts missing. :|

Well, at least you got them back. And they are certainly fast enough to run Linux apps. 🙂

well they kept telling me that the evidence could not be released because of appeals but there were none, The guy got probation, I think that someone was using them and they could not find them.
The story was funny at the time and to me even funnier now, the post was made not to complain but thought some would get a chuckle out of it, there was a lot of talk about it at the time because the guy was using my machine on my dialup account and that was what brought him down.

"I think that someone was using them"

I bet that is exactly it. Someone that knew the situation and knows computers since the memopry was taken. :|

Nice justice! ,they hold onto it long enough so its depriecates massively & isn't worth much ,& the memory adds insult to injury!🙁

I guy I work with used to own his own machine shop (or something of that nature) until all his equipment was stolen one weekend. The cops found his stuff at a pawn shop and shut down the pawn shop but they won't give him his equipment back. So he had to get a job for someone else and hope he can eventually get his stuff back so he can revive his own business.

I dont think that this unusual, if fact I think it happens a lot more than one would think. I dont know what a guy can do about it. Those that are paid to protect you and your stuff are doing things backwards..
I can just hear the phone call now, "we got good news for you we got your stuff back now the bad news is we are keeping it. I am sorry but because we recovered it your insurance will not pay."
