Got license--no disk

I've seen this before but don't remember the answer.

I bought a used computer today and it has XP home installed. The product key sticker is on the case but the dufus who sold it to me can't find the disk.

Is it possible to get a disk from Microsoft and if so, how do I do it?

If not, another notch in newegg's cash register.

The original owner's name is scattered all over the hard drive and, of course, XP won't let me change it.

Thanks for any help.

If the OS came preinstalled, you will have to go to the manufacturer for the disk, or it may be on a hidden partition for a reinstall.
You can use progs like xsetup to change a lot of info easily.

Thanks for the reply. The fellow said that it was custom made my a company in New Jersey.

I'll Google xsetup to see what it's all about.

Appreciate the tip.🙂

Well, xsetup did identify the mainboard manufacturer and the model number so I downloaded the manual and also located all of the drivers.

Thanks, tiap.

Who is the Manufacturer of your laptop. I may have an OEM hanging around if its a Dell or a Gateway.

It's a New Jersey company. Don't have the name handy but SiSoft Sandra a gave me the phone number.

Since I have the license, couldn't I just use any OEM disk? I'm going to try it when I get ahold of one.

Yes, you can use any disk. Technically, you could download a warez copy and it would still be legal (although you have to beware of virii, trojans etc. that tend to infest pirated software).

What you own is not a disk, you own a license to use the operating system. As long as you're running one copy it doesn't really matter where it came from.

Thanks for that. I really appreciate it. I now have a copy of Windows XP Home (OEM) and when I am ready I will install it.🙂

My other two computers have Win XP Home upgrade retail so they wouldn't cut it.

Thanks again.

Well, it's done. I wiped the drive and reinstalled XP using a copy of a friends disk. It already had SP2 on it so I'm good to go.

It activated without a hitch.

The way I see it, you owe me a retail copy of XP Home now. 😀

Get a copy of the disk while you have it, in case you need it again.

Come over and I give you a retail version.

I made a half dozen copies of the borrowed disk and will guard it with my life.
