I don't understand why people are so freaked out about people using their wifi. My network is open.. I don't care. If someone wants to use it, that's fine with me. It's not like they're going to hack into any of my shit.. I could care less about the bandwidth.

Because its a trivial matter to watch the traffic, figure out the necessary MAC address, and change yours to it. Its the same concept as watching someone enter a secret club by knocking on the door with a special code. You only have to watch it once and then you can do it, too.

There are programs out there that will do all of this for you and are as easy as clicking a button.

And how many people know how to do that/get the programs to do that? Most people don't even know what a MAC address is, let alone how to find out what their own is. In general this is a pretty secure method as the leacher probably got a laptop and saw "Oh, theres a wireless network next door, ill connect to it."

Yeah but would if someone hops on your network and continuosly downloads a bunch kiddie porn and it gets traced to your network. Yeah I'm sure you could easily fight it and prove it wasnt yours but do you really wanna go through the hassle when you could just secure your network?
