Jesus, Eli, you just can't seem to catch a break!

Good luck looking for the next job, and remember that a lot of people on these forums think highly of you. Wait... is that a good thing? ;)

My last day will be on Friday the 16th.

This does not bode well for my living in Santa Fe. It took me a month and a half to find a job when I first moved here, and that was back in August/September. Things are quite a bit worse now.

I give up. :(

that sucks:(. Hope you find something that you can do soon.

I got until may 28th myself before I get laid off.

If you're decent with SQL and want to move to NY (metro NYC) there's a position at my company open. :)

Otherwise, good luck.

While the recent announcement of Lexmark laying of 375 employees doesn't affect me, there are rumors of smaller cuts coming to my department that aren't included in that. I'm by far not the worst employee on my team, and my job is 100% integral to the company to continue doing what it's doing, so I'm optimistic that I'll still have a job within the next couple of months. Now that I'm married and a homeowner, I don't know what I'd do if I lost my job.

Good luck.

I was Shipping and Receiving Coordinator for a jewelry manufacturer.

Just a menial job, but it was a job.. and I had no idea this was coming. Just a few weeks ago, my boss and I were talking about promotions and advancements, because I was doing so well.

They let both me and my boss go. Doh.

Ugh, that sucks. I don't think ATOT can lay you off, so you've still got us!

Santa Fe's a rough town without money. You might fare better moving south to Albuquerque it's only 60 miles.

We just moved into an awesome new house, which really strapped us for cash in the first place.... And we have a year lease.. Ugh.

If I move, it will be with my cat and my computer back to Portland. Fuck NM. This place is a shithole.

Sorry to see so many job losses here on AT

What made you move to NM from Portland to begin with?

Yeah, you might be better off in Portland, and I know you mean Oregon. Great music scene there and I bet it's a happening place. Good luck! I know it hurts to get the pink slip, even when you know it's coming. When you're blindsided, so much the worse. Look on the bright side, always!

Good fucking question.

My brother and I decided to go for it, just for a chance of scenery. We had both lived in Portland all our lives. Worst decision evAr. For me at least.. he hasn't been having as hard a time here, for whatever reason.

It sucks man. There are multiple award winners in my industry that have been let go, too. It's a rough time; even our creative director told my team it's going to be tough even GETTING a job right now. Next year it should be good.

Good luck with everything.

become an auto mechanic.

in these tough economic times, noone buys new cars. they'll repair their beaters.

you have job security till the econ picks up when biden becomes pres in 2010 :Q

You would think so but my mechanic is hurting pretty badly. People aren't repairing stuff, they're just driving them into the ground.

I met (or heard of, can't remember) a guy who would buy $50 cars and drive them until they stopped and leave them there. :D

You'd be surprised. I've gotten UE tons of times. 3 months probably qualifies you. You won't get as much as if you'd worked a year, but you will get checks.

Wow that sucks. So many people losing their jobs over this recession. did you and your boss get along well? Maybe try to start a business of some sort. Considering you're both with no income but lot of free time, it might be something to look into. Maybe a jewlery store and compete with the one you worked for. Though, what is really the market for jewlery during a recession? probably not a good industry to be in right now.

Yeah, market for jewelry is terrible right now. My parents own a jewelry store, they have not been making much for a while now. Bad idea.

They're only forecasting growth to flatline this year, or maybe a 3% drop, after 4 years of solid double digit growth. I suppose they could just be being hopeful. They have a saying in the jewelry industry "When in a financial crunch, women will purchase a necklace - instead of a necklace and earrings.".. lol.

But yeah, we got along well. It's funny you mention that. He's been planning on starting up a Dairy, his family has cows that are his down in California.

I did (albeit a bit jokingly) ask him if he needed any help, didn't get much of a response though. ;) lol.. I'm sure it's not like hes rich.

The crazy thing though, is that my boss was working on plans that would have saved them literally tens of thousands of dollars a year, having to do with harmonized tariff codes and Customs. See, in addition to making the high-end jewelry in-house, a lot of our jewelry is made in places like India, Hungary, Thailand, Indonesia, and yes.. China. But due to keyword descriptions, things were getting classified wrong, costing the company tens of thousands(sometimes a month!) in excess customs fees. I was working with him doing database stuff, building databases of items and their HT code for different suppliers to use.

It was actually fairly interesting and complicated. Immense amounts of international shipments happening all the time. Jewelry is something that is always changing.. new designs. It's also something that you need to hold and see physically; pictures don't do it justice. So there is all this cross shipment of materials and final product samples.

It was a pretty cool job.. Almost always moving, and always something new going on.
