Halo(retail), quick impressions:

Grabbed this one at EB at lunch (damn they had a bunch of preorders!) and spent a bit of time with it at lunch. Just wanted to post my impressions.

System specs: P4 3.2, 1gb Cosair PC3500, WD SATA (10K rpm) drive, ATI 9500p OC'd to 9700p, latest drivers. After installing the game I installed the patch posted yesterday.

Note - I completed the xbox version when it first came out, and haven't touched it since.

Played through the escape off the ship, and through the planet surface to the cave so I think I got a good sense of framerate because several times there were lots of critters on the screen. I forgot how good the storyline of Halo is. Anyways, while I wouldn't say the game 'looks and plays horrible' as some around here have said, it definately has some slowdowns. Having said that, it doesn't bog down nearly as bad as the xbox version did when there was lots of action on the screen (and that's at 1024x768). Visually, again it isn't BAD, it's just not 'knock your socks off'. I guess I'd say it's showing it's age, that's all. It doesn't detract from the gameplay, it's just not up there with current titles.

Some gripes:

-This might have existed with the xbox version, but the shooting 'ring' feels loose. the ring turns red, and you pull the trigger. Doesn't mean everything in the ring gets hit, so I guess that's why I say it feels 'loose'.
-It's easier with the mouse/keyboard than the controller on the xbox. The SP version won't last long at normal difficulty. Yes you can play it at harder difficulties for sure. I'm just saying I only played about an hour and that would have taken me three hours or close to it on the xbox version. Maybe I just suck...
-Enemy AI seems a little 'dumber' in the PC version. That coupled with the mouse/keyboard again makes it play a little easier. I died once in the hour I played, and that was due to routing a corner and a big blue baddie was there with a plasma granade.
-Gearbox/Mickysoft should have done a better job visually with the port - no doubt. Years in the making, there's just not an excuse for this. Again, the game is perfectly playable, it just doesn't WOW you like the xbox version did.
-I was unable to get connected to gamespy for multiplayer. I don't know if they are overwhelmed or something else, but I tried several times and 'couldn't connect to gamespy server'. I launched a MP game of my own and waited but nobody joined.

Anyways, dunno, I'm still out on this one. I bought it for multiplayer and other mods, but am playing it through the campaign again to see how they did with it. It plays fine, it's just not 'all that' for those of us used to quality FPS on the PC. I'm hoping MP is 'da bomb', else that's another 44.95 I could have saved.

Simple - multiplayer and future mods, not to mention being able to experience the game w/keyboard mouse.

It's good to know I'm not the only one that can't connect to gamespy for MP, I was wondering as it was working last night.

For me the action seems fast, especially when compared to BF42.

Dag - Gamespy is still down? I was hoping to get some MP in this evening when I get home. They'd better get that fixed here soon! If not I might just have to host a game myself. Good thing I upgraded to the 512MB upstream DSL service :D

I personally don't use gamespy, but if it's any consolation, the in game multiplayer selector works perfectly fine.

I played a little single player & multiplayer, but I mainly bought the game to play multiplayer. Neat, but I'm not sure if I like it. I'll give it some time though.

Exactly. I played Halo on the XBox when it first came out. The game was great back then but I have no urge to play it again on the PC. I guess most of the people buying the PC version are the ones that refuse to get an XBox.

P.S. And yes, I even played online with Halo on the XBox. ;)

Well, I am playing it on a Ti4600 at 1024*768, and it is very playable. Sometimes when there are like 30 Covenant on the screen plus a drop ship, it slows down to sub 10 fps, but usually it feels like 20-30 fps. If I go down to 800*600 I don't notice the same slowdowns, and I feel like it is more like 30 fps. This is no AA and no AF. Yes their are jaggies, but this game is fun. I plan on building a new system in a few months. If Halo is any indication of HL2's performance, I think it can hold me over. Otherwise, I may just upgrade the Video Card when HL2 comes out.

I am running a 2500 barton at 205 FSB (mem 410), 11x (2.2Ghz), 1GB RAM, 9700Pro (stock speed). There were some definite slow downs in the crowded fire fights in the ship. However, the vast majority of the time it played fine. After I quit for the night, I realized that I left AA on. As I understand it, AA does nothing for the visual quality (in this game) but does slow down the frame rate. I think I will start over and see how it works without AA. I was running 1024x768 (2xAA/8x perf AF) with all visual quality settings to max, audio settings set to max as well.

I would also agree with HostVisions about the difficulty of the game. I only played a little of the Xbox version but the mouse/keyboard makes the game much easier for me. I played on normal setting but I think I will up the difficulty a notch. I would say if you normally play FPS at the standard (normal) setting the game will probably seem a bit on the easy side.

I was very nervous about the performance of game. After my brief experience I am not anymore. While I feel it should perform better on a system like mine, it does perform well enough to be enjoyable. Of course, for folks with less horsepower, you might have to play with the audio/video settings to get acceptable frame rates.

P.S. And yes, I even played online with Halo on the XBox. ;)

Even I did ... and I had a 56k connection

that lasted about 5 seconds

I will be picking up the game to play multiplayer and to re-beat the SP Game. It should be great game for LANs too

I guess our quality standards just got way higher... Anyway, they should have improved it...

Correct. And I hold no hopes that they'll release a patch to enable. If it were that easy they would have done it from the start. I seriously fail to see why they weren't able to pull this off, as the xbox has it, online even!

UT2K3 blows this engine out of the water. With the same settings, UT2K3 will perform at least 4X better.

I can run 1024X768X32 with 4X FSAA and 8X Anisotropic filtering on UT2K3 and have it play smother than Halo running at 1024X768X32 with no other features enabled.

Also good to note that I think the detail in UT2K3 is much cleaner and sharper than Halo.

So, do I like the game? Sort of, I was really hoping the port would run smoother on a PC. It is sad to see my system play this game so choppy at times. Yes, the game runs smooth *most* of the time, but I am more picky than that... I prefer it to never glitch up.

I used to never give credit to Epic and their UT Engine... But now I am beginning to see how well they have cleaned it up and programmed it. The engine is beautiful and efficient.

The only other engine that I believe will compete with it on an *outdoor* level is the upcomming "far cry" game from CryEngine. www.crytek.com

I am somewhat dissapointed in Halo and I hope they can improve the performance with a patch. As it is not you need a pretty darn fast system to even remotely enjoy it.

My Rig is a AMD 2800XP Barton with 768 DDR 333 and a Radeon 9500 Pro...

This post is in response to the guy asking about how it compares to UT2K3.

i can't believe how crappy the game performs either... they recommend 30fps for best visual enjoyment???????? we're PC gamers, not console gamers.

It's playable on my Athlon T-bird 900 (that's T-Bird, not T-Bred!) at 800*600 with all the graphic options turned off. I have a Radeon 8500LE. Not as good as I'd hoped. Now, if I can just wait until the summer when the cash and time to move up to the Athlon 64...

So far I have been playing it on my 2.0a with 512 MB ram and a Ti4600 just fine. I have one question though. Every so often I see at the top right part of the screen, a quick flicker of a yellow line or a red line. I saw it when I ran the timedemo too, when there were black bars up there. Has anyone else seen this? I am connected DVI to my 1800FP. I do not notice this in any other game.
