Did all you go to a preppy private school? In public schools fights are common, and I saw plenty at mine that were started over absolutely nothing at all. Seeing how my school had at least 4 fights a week OP's story doesn't sound the least bit unbelievable to me *shrug* And considering I've seen people bleed from just a slap, I don't see why he couldn't have made a dude bleed with fists.
