got infected with virus... bootup to windows=auto reboot

hey i got infected with the bloodhound virus recently. at first norton antivirus told me it was unable to clean the virus, so i rebooted my computer and did a full scan... norton then told me that the virus was quarantined and deleted. up until today the computer was OK, running a little slow but did not have any problems. now when i am booting into windows 2000, the computer will automatically reboot when i reach the blue screen. i have tried safe mode, and i have even tried to repair my computer with the windows 2000 install CD. now i am forced to reformat my C:\ drive and reinstall windows 2000, however i have not had the chance to backup my files yet. how can i reach my files to back them up, and is it safe to back them up because of the virus? thanks!
 
to keep from autorebooting while doing this,

start>run>shutdown -a

reboot into safemode with networking via F8 and use an online scanner like house call to scan your PC. delete the virus it finds.

FYI... shutdown - a doesn't work with all OS's
 
If you can get someone to burn a Knoppix Linux CD for you, you could boot into Knoppix and use it to rescue your files (it comes with a CD burning app that hopefully should work OK with your CD burner - assuming you have one).

If you can't get hold of a Knoppix Disk easily (it is a 700MB download so you need friends with broadband), drop me a PM and I would be happy to mail you out a copy.

Also, when you reinstall Win2K (if the drive isn't already partitioned) it would be a good idea to divide up your hard drive into at least two partitions so that you can move your documents folder into a different partition than your OS. That way, if you have to format and reinstall your OS, your documents won't be affected.

The latest version (3.4) had no problem reading my WinXP NTFS partitions, so it should read yours fine so long as you didn't encrypt any of the files or folders. And once you get up and running again, you can always run a virus scan of the files on the CD before you copy them back, to just make sure they are safe.
 
Bart'sPE has helped me backup other peoples files on machines that wouldn't boot several times. It takes a little bit of effort to make the CD, but it's worth the trouble.
