For the record, it's also illegal in some states to wear sunglasses if your license doesn't indicate that you wear glasses. Just because it's not heavily enforced doesn't mean you shouldn't be prepared to get a ticket if you get caught doing it.

More likely the cop stopped him because he thought the car was suspicious - suspicious can have a pretty broad definition, ranging from driving erratically to driving normally - but the OP gave him some attitude so he gave him a ticket that he otherwise wouldn't have. Or maybe the guy was just being a dick, either is possible.

It's the same for New York. My mom has a stuffed fish hanging from her rear view mirror and had it hanging there for a year or two and hasn't been pulled over.

Most cops don't even want to bother with something like that. I'm thinking that cop wanted to meet his ticket quota or that it was a newbie that was excited to make a stop.

And you know this how?

1) Quotas have been discussed many times - they're not something that all departments have..namely because they're illegal. Blanket statements saying that officers have to meet quotas come from ignorance.

2) Excited to make a stop? You can follow any car for five minutes - chances are that they will conduct a traffic violation.

3) If the officer had noticed anything suspicious, the tassle legally gave him probably cause to pull the car over - as ridiculous as it sounds..it's technically a visual obstruction (per FL law..not sure about everywhere else). It's also 'technically' illegal to coast downhill in neutral..etc..

Well, they did ask to search my car, which I declined. They took that to mean I had been arrested before. They checked my license out, and when they saw that I indeed have not been arrested, then did a search looking in to see if he could see something. I signed my ticket then left.

Now, I was simply asking what would happen if I fought it...which I am going to do. Some people gave me good advice on what to do and a lot of other just filled in the space with a bunch of worthless junk.

Look carefully at the parking ticket. Somewhere on the ticket it will say "remove when vehicle is in motion" or something like that.

Granted, no-one actually takes them off of their mirror, but it's still not legal and the ticket makers put that on their to absolve them of liability.

I agree.. the sad thing about it is that if only a few people actually get caught, there won't be enough people to complain to have anything done about the law. So there will always be a small minority that will get screwed by a bs law.

err I have, on the permit. And I have read the parking rules and regulations brochure that they mail out to every student with the permit.
Plus they wouldn't be stupid enough to make the parking permit to hang on the rear view window if it was illegal. They would just make a sticker or the sort.

It's perfectly legal to have it there when you're parked. 😛

On one of my cars, the tint is too dark and the exhaust is illegal - first/last time I got a ticket (Aug '04), the officer didn't mention either. However, my mother (heh) was pulled over a few weeks back, but the officer (literally) started yelling at the driver of another car about a loud stereo, and took off after it..
 
That's the dumbest thing ever. What about when people use the mirrors to block the sun? Doesn't that cover at least 1/3 of their vision out the windshield?

I don't get this.

my rear view is at an angle to me that no motorist will be an issue going forward unless it's a crashing cessna.

 
I just drove home from work. I don't even notice the parking permit when I drive. My brain automatically ignores it. Plus it only blocks one eye, the other eye automatically fills in the picture.
Tassels are just a few pieces of string FFS! It won't obstruct anyone's vision.
 
that sucks for you. on a side note, my school's parking permit is required to be hanged on the rearview mirror, is that illegal?
