Got clipped by a car tonight on my ride home.

I was riding up the 15 freeway in San Diego, traffic was horrible, cars changing lanes left and right. As I was nearing the 78 I was riding along slowly in the carpool lanes when the car to my left signaled as he started moving over. I was in the left side of my lane and he was just suddenly right on me, nothing I could do to avoid and his mirror hit my left handlebar which wrenched the bar and jammed my right shoulder and wrist and for some reason my left foot. Because I was going faster than he was the jerking of the bar to the left caused the bike to go to the right and away from him so I never even went down.

Not really any damage to me or the bike fortunately. Could have been a lot worse. My shoulder is sore though as is my right wrist.

Glad you're OK. You need to drive defensively especially on a bike. Passing cars on the right in the left side of the lane is not prudent.

ive seen enough people act idiotic in cars to never want to ride on the street without a steelcage surrounding me.

That's why I have never had any interest at all in riding on the street. Trees don't change lanes where I ride.

To too many cagers, motorcyclists are invisible. If riding a cycle doesn't teach you defensive driving, nothing ever will. 🙁

Did you and he, ummmmmm, dialog?

It's amazing there aren't more size swipe accidents than there are. People don't do shoulder checks. I've had a couple of folks over the years almost merge into me, and I could see they were just glancing at the mirrors, and that was it. My couple of years working at the rental lot showed me that a lot of people don't even know how to set up their mirrors properly.

We get a motorcyclist creamed about once a week in the summer here in Toronto. Granted some do ride like asshats. So it works both ways.

If you're going to ride a motorcycle, carry a knife. A very basic tool but it can come in handy in many situations. For example, in this situation, one long scratch of the car and all will be well. Make sure to give a thumbs up before leaving. He won't even know what happened.

You are either trolling, or recommending the OP commit a crime. Sorry, but neither are acceptable here. And if you merely meant to be humorous, you failed.

As long as you're ok, that's what's important.

Yeah, I'm fine. It was kind of surreal, it just happened so quickly and there wasn't really any time to react. I saw him signal, saw the car start coming over and I just had no time to avoid him. I must have been spacing or something... I should have been able to avoid this.

... and I just had no time to avoid him.

I do everything I can (defensive driving, situational awareness) to avoid such situations, but they can happen to anyone at any time, and remain a low-key personal nightmare of mine . . . the unavoidable accident. 🙁

All you can do, all anyone can do, is shorten the odds.
