The Mercedes is probably just a paint or chrome. The XJR was un painted to show off it's all aluminum chassis.

I can't remember the name of the company or what the process is called.

I have seen chrome paint applied. It is durable but must be applied in a clean room.
You know that rubbery feeling that some pens and mice have. Thats paint!!
