Get a laser printer and stop moaning. THere's a reason why they cost $100. (unless you spent $500 on a photo-ink printer:D)

My dad is big into photo printing. He had some HP photo printer which was good, but replaced it with a 6 color Epson printer which does produce slightly higher fidelity photo outputs. Make sure you get the right paper for it; it really does make quite a big difference. As well, you need the digital camera/imaging device with enough data for the printer to take advantage of.

Just to add Cannon gives you new ink carts with the purchase of 1 Printhead so figure that into the equation....I like my Canon and my Alps 5000MD which does Subdye. ;)

Alright, I am going to get a new printer for sure. Still pondering what to get. Any recommendation?

I want to print photo with borderless print out. The photo print out has to be as good as Canon S800 or better.

Canon i960. buy an extra years warranty if you want too.

I did see a stack of i950's at compusa a couple weeks ago fro $119. The older model of the i960. Quality is the same. A little slower and no pictbridge.

Confused... Over here, they are selling Canon i990 and the lower modal is called i905D.

i990 comes with 7 color think tank with a retail of RM1698 (US 441.00)

Let me share with the the cost over here:
My S800 fail with Print head problem only not more than 2 years and as far as I know, not use too much to cause it failure.

Sent it to repair and would cost me US120.00 to repair.

If not, I can trade it in for:
i990 for US327.00 (Retail at US441.00)
i905D for US 290.38 (Retail at US360.52)
i865 for US 155.32 (Retail at US189.10)

My guess is my S800 are 6 color think tank model so its on the level of i905D.

Find it ridicous since I spend quite a bit on the S800 and it fail without not too much of printing.

The i990 is a wide format printer. Up to 13" x 19".

The i905 is a six color printer.

The i865 is a 5 color printer. Prints on Cd's or so I hear. That model is not offered in the USA, just the i860.

The i series printers have better resolution thatn the older s series.
I dunno if the i series makes up the difference between your s800 and the i865 but it's probably pretty close.

Like you said, the i905 would be closer lineage-wise to your s800 because it's a 6 color printer.

There is also a i960 that's less than the i905D that 6 color.

Really depends on your needs but the i865 is a great all around printer. Cheaper to run (if you do a lot of text) than the i905D because it has a large pigmented black cartridge. The i905D is more of a dedicated photo printer.

If you go to canon.com you can compare all their printers.

----------------------

Just on a side note. What are the symptoms of you printhead failure? Could just be clogged.

I have a Epson 640 printer that I have had for 5 years, works wonderfully. I eve use it for printing photos. It used cheap cheap cheap cartridges. I pay 90 cents for the black and $1.40 for the color cartridges. Yes I did buy a head cleaning cartridge for each and run it about once a year (the head cleaners run about $6 each). I am actually trying to buy another one since they work so well and are cheap as can be, I am in a bid on ebay right now, will end in four days. Hope to get another one. I also have a black and white HP Laserjet 5L which you can refill the toner approx 3-4 time each before you have to replace the drum unit for about $80. I bought a 3 refill kit for it fro $29.95 on the net. I am super happy with my two printers.

I was just given two (for free) HP Laserjet 6L printers. They both muti sheet feed but work other than that. I have some old repair kits for the multi sheet feeding problem so now I will have three printers which are cheap to run. Man I am happy.

Check and see if the Canon i965 is available. It costs about $50 more than the i865 and offers six color printing.

i865 is five cartridges:

BCI-6Bk Black ink tank, BCI-3eBk Black ink tank (for text printing only), BCI-6C Cyan ink tank, BCI-6M Magenta ink tank, BCI-6Y Yellow ink tank

i965 is six cartridges:

BCI-6Bk Black ink tank, BCI-6PC Photo Cyan ink tank, BCI-6PM Photo Magenta ink tank, BCI-6C Cyan ink tank, BCI-6M Magenta ink tank, BCI-6Y Yellow ink tank

Unfortunately we in the U.S. cannot purchase these printers with the included CD/DVD print kit (because Epson has a patent on it here). But, otherwise, these are the same printers as the i860 and i960.

You really can't. It's luck of the draw. I (and my kids) have been using and abusing my Canon S600 for about 2-3 years and it prints just as good now as when I bought it. Like I said, luck of the draw.

Lol @ the title.

You should look @ how much you have spent over the last 2 years, do the math with a HP /Lexmark printer and you wont feel like you were cheated.

I have had my canon i450($60) for about a year and about 12 carts(apx $ 1.65 each) =$79.80

If I had purchased a HP/Lexmark ($50) and 12 carts ($25)=$350.00

I just got a HP photosmart 7960. It's an 8-ink printer and the pictures are beautiful. Not to mention there isn't that many printers out there that can touch the B&W photo quality.

I'm a bit confused as to why you need to send it in to get the head replaced. all the canon inkjets i have seen you flip a lever and the head pops out. Someone mentioned that you get the ink carts with the head for $86. So you are getting $60 in ink. So the head itself costs $26. Sounds cheap to me.

As to the head lasting "only 2 years", on many HPs you change the print head every chartridge change. So they last a lot less time.

That HP 540 is painfully slow compared todays inkjets, especially the Canons.

That's one good reason to upgrade.

I've used a 520 since then too :)

I suppose it is better to have the head on the cartridge so at least it can be replaced and is not prematurely required to be if refilled instead.

I've had my 882c for around 6 years. At least I think thats when I got it, it came with my DELL whent they first started selling P3 500 machines. It, my KB, and my monitor are the oldest computer componets I still use.
