Our car stalled on the road and we had it towed to a nearby shop. Upon inspection, the mechanic said that we needed a fuel pump replacement. We said OK and paid $500. After we left the shop and drove around for half a day, we realized that the fuel gauge was messed up--it was showing that the car still had gas while the tank was empty.

You don't have to be a mechanic to figure out that the car originally stalled because the tank was empty. The idiot mechanic replaced the entire pump instead. The car now has the same problem as it had before we brought it in, except for having a brand new fuel pump that we don't need, and we're $500 in a hole. The old pump is in the trash.

I proposed that they either fix the gauge for free or refund the money we paid for the pump, they refused. Luckily, we originally paid with a Mastercard (Sony card from Citi). Is there a remedy through the credit card company? I have succesfully disputed unauthorized charges before, but this case is different, since we did authorize the pump replacement, we just didn't know it wasn't needed. Do cardmember agreements cover these cases? Thanks guys.

I would do this as well as your local consumer protection group. Maybe call a local Television station.

With automotive repair a misdiagnosis is usually at your cost, you really have to think your mechanic knows what he is doing. Are you sure the old pump wasn't bad though? Its pretty easy to test one to see if it works....although the repair price was pretty high anyway.
