Got any travel suggestions for two people on a $4,000 budget?

The fiancee and I are getting married in May/June of '03. Date has yet to be determined. We were originally planning on doing an Alaskan cruise but frankly, they want too damn much for two little. For 4 g's I know that we can put together one hell of a trip ourselves.

Sooooo...we are looking for suggestions. We love nature/scenic things. The more majestic mountains the better! Small amounts of tourists a plus, but not absolutely necessary. We are looking to spend somewhere between 7 and 14 days round trip. Departure would be from the Midwest, particulars can be worked out.

Things we've considered -
- Australia
- Making our own Alaskan travel package
- Europe (Swiss/Austrian Alps maybe?)
- Hawaii (overdone, but still neat none the less)

I'm looking for suggestions! Any place that you have been or would love to go on that would fit in the $4,000 budget?
 
With $2,000USD each, you could easily come up to Banff, Alberta. That place is THE most awe inspiring, majestic place I have ever been. I stood on Lake Louise in awe for 30 minutes just looking up at the Victoria Glacier.

There is so much to do there too. You can ski or snowboard at Sunshine Village, Lake Louise or Mt. Norquay. You can visit the hot mineral springs at the Banff Springs Hotel, or drive up to the Icefields, and go explore them.

The best thing is, the entire area is a National Park. That means, the amount of development is limited and smaller numbers of tourists.

If my future wife doesn't mind the mountains, thats where our honeymoon is going to be! If you have any more questions, PM me.
 
That's a prime time to stay in Yosemite. With $4k, you could stay at the Ahwahnee right in the park. It's 5-star hotel. That time of year the falls are BOOMING and there's plenty of hiking and loads of beauty.
 
Sluggo, Jamaica would be more of a December/January trip. Also, how "clean" is Jamaica?

Italy !!


I second that motion... Venice is the obvious choice but I prefer Florence, it's very laid back and charming.. and the art located there is simply breathtaking.
 
We love nature/scenic things.

Banff: Yes! Definitely nice.
Yosemite: it's so-so. It was kinda disappointing when my family visited Yosemite, but Sequoia was really nice.

Park of choice: Go visit Yellowstone! It is the most wonderful place, and it will take you many days to get to see everthing 🙂 Also really worthwhile are: Grand Canyon, Arches, Bryce Canyon.
 
Belize...hmmm....need to consult the Rand McNally Atlas on that one 🙂

As for the folks suggesting France/Italy, assuming we could get air fare out of the way for $1,000, how far would $3,000 USD get us once we get over there?
 
After college I went to Europe for 2 months for only about 4 or 5 grand 😎 I did mostly stay in youth hostels though which are not the romantic places in the world. I would recommend going to the highlands of Scottland! They are awesome. Also, on the north-west part of Scotland there is an Island called the Isle of Skye(I think that's how you spell it). It was one of the most scenic places I have ever been to in my entire life. There are costal regions, mountains, cliffs, forests, and the weather changes every hour. On the mainland right next to Skye is the castle where some parts of the first Highlander movie were filmed!
 
What a coincidence! My travel agency is having a special on scenic tours of my basement! On a more serious note If you go to Alaska, one thing to do is rent forest service cabins. Their cheap, comfortable, out, but not too far out in the wild, and they're all over the place up there. The only downside is that you generally have to reserve them months in advance. A few years back I stayed at one near whitier that had a path up to alpine medows...just plain breathtaking. Bah, I didnt have my digital camera then or I would show you. If your there during the salmon runs it can get a little scary though...bears sometimes take one bite of fish and leave the other half lying on the riverbank, like a warning or something. Kept me on my toes 🙂

Definitely in my top 3 list.
 
Jamaica definitely has its poor and unclean areas, but there is also much pristine land up in the mountains and stuff. We basically dont wander too far from the resort, so the only parts I know much about are the path from my room to the bar at the beach. 😀

We go in October every year, but we have friends who go in the dead of summer, and save a bundle over the winter travelers. Jamaica has basically the same weather all year round.

And so far as scenery is concerned, you havent lived till you have sat at the cliffs in Negril and drank some cold Red Stripe beer, smelled the ganja in the air while watching the sunset............well if I had been able to take my eyes off that one girl in the thong bikini I would have really enjoyed the sunset. 😱
 
Arizona/Utah/California

In a relatively small area you could see Meteor Crater, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Monument Valley, Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon NP, and then either head a little north to see the dino digs or head a little west to see Death Valley, Joshua Tree, etc. in CA.

Come to Hawaii!!! It's not overdone, as you can travel to many diverse locations (that are NOT tourist filled) 🙂 We have mountains (huge mountains), ocean, hiking, etc. -- and a variety of ecosystems to explore. Don't forget our volcanoes -- you can visit both dormant and live ones 🙂 There are lots of GREAT deals, too, because our tourism industry has been so hard hit.
 
I spent a few of my vacations in the beautiful towns of Flond and St. Moritz of Switzerland. Though expensive, it is the ultimate experience.

Did you do any skiing ? I had the pleasure of skiing in the Austrian Alps and it was really beautiful !
