Got an email saying I need to appear in court

z1ggy

Lifer
I got an email from "Baker & McKenzie" saying I need to appear in the court of El Monte Sept 21 @ 1040am. Saying to bring all documents and witnesses relating to my "case".

It's signed by "Cleark of Court" and makes no mention to any charges I'm facing, the district/county this court is in or really anything pointing to wtf this is talking about.

I have no been issued any tickets or the like since October of 2009. I was pulled over by a cop maybe 6-7 weeks ago, but was given a warning. Also, apparently I went through a toll with my EZ Pass with out paying. I got an email about that and thought I took care of it.

Could this have anything to do with the EZ pass thing? Even if it did, why would I be summoned to appear in court? I'd just pay whatever fines were associated with it and be done.

When I clicked on an apparent link to view a copy of the court notice, it took me to a page that did not exist, with the URL being Shannonhealey.com

This doesn't seem legit at all, but I don't want to miss a court date if I really did have one.

When I clicked on an apparent link,...

Oooo,.. no no no no no.

Don't ever click on anything. Hover over to see the URL and then do a WHOIS search, but, never click on anything from within your e-mail.

Keep on eye out on any e-mails you may have sent about cheap viagra to all your contacts at 3am though.

Lol, email them back and string them along.

I received two voicemails on my cell phone a few weeks ago. I could barely understand the person due to 1) a heavy accent and 2) a lot of noise in the background, but I made out a few words such as "you or your lawyer need to contact us immediately!" and something about "paying taxes" and "jail time." I googled it and apparently the good old IRS scam is still happening. I was really hoping to answer a call and play along just for lulz, but they stopped calling.

I did this on my old shit iphone, so if it fucked anything up I really don't care. I'll make sure to delete the email though so it can't effect my actual PC.

all legal correspondences, especially to appear in court are through the mail, or delivered to your address by a currier and not solely by email.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Currier

A currier is a specialist in the leather processing industry. After the tanning process, the currier[1] applies techniques of dressing, finishing and colouring to the tanned hide to make it strong, flexible and waterproof. The leather is stretched and burnished to produce a uniform thickness and suppleness, and dyeing and other chemical finishes give the leather its desired colour.

This, except it would likely be certified mail or a courier.

I'm sure the OP is joking around (at least, I HOPE he is), but people still fall for these gags. My friend's step-dad got a call a few months ago from "tech support" and they wanted $300 to "fix" his computer. The step dad thought it sounded fishy but nevertheless, he went down to CVS and got a $300 VISA card to give them rather than his own VISA card number. I mean, WTF?!?!?!

I know it wasn't legit, but what is this thing even going for? There's no way to contact them actually. Maybe the link contacts some malware or something...Who knows. I think my favorite part is the,

Sad trombone. The justice department will never, ever email you with a summons to appear in court. They'll come by regular mail or by courier, and will probably be stamped with the county seal.

I'm sure they'll ask for money to "resolve" your legal issues once they contact you.

There is a site somewhere (forgot the address) where people who receive Nigerian spam emails lead them on and post all the correspondence, etc. on the site for lulz. It was pretty damn funny.

You need to be issued a summons to appear in court, and I believe it has to be hand delivered. Definite scam.

lol Baker & McKenzie is one of the largest law firms in the world - somehow I doubt they are handling your traffic ticket for you via email. Maybe that's just the cynic in me.

A quick Google tells me it's a scam:
The Los Angeles Superior Court is advising the public that communications warning of a pending case against the individual, or demanding money or personal information may not be from the court or its authorized collection vendor GC Services.
Some of these fake communications made by email could contain an attachment or a link that may install a virus or other spyware on the computer. Other communications make fraudulent demands to pay a fine or provide personal information, such as a Social Security number.

The public should be aware that such scams are occurring.

The Court sometimes makes automated phone calls reminding people of a court appearance or jury service. If the Court does so, the caller will not demand any personal information.

To respond to a jury summons, go to the court’s official website: www.lasuperiorcourt.org and click on “Jury Services.” Or call the court’s juror services department at 1-800-778-5879.

The Court uses a vendor to collect on certain delinquent fees and fines. To confirm an inquiry about delinquent court-ordered debt, you can call GC Services at 1-800-352-3778, or visit their website: https://courtpay.gcserv.com

Anyone with questions about a suspicious communication that appears to be from Los Angeles Superior Court should contact the court. A list of phone numbers for all Los Angeles Superior Court locations can be found on the court’s website: www.lasuperiorcourt.org (click on “Locations”) or by calling the court’s Public Information Office at (213) 974-5227.

Are you even anywhere near LA?
