Got an ATI X1950XTX

Just got an X1950XTX vid card. It performs slightly better than my previous 2 7800 GT cards in sli, but I am wondering if I can get more performance if I change out my X2 3800+ cpu. If so, what would be the ideal s939 chip to get? Dont want to do a whole mobo/cpu swap so I want to stick with s939 for a while. Just want to know if getting a 4600+ or 4800+ would be a worthy upgrade from my 3800+

I dont think you're bottlenecked too bad. Why not just overclock?

For what it's worth, I found only marginal gains going from 7800GT SLI 500/1200 to an X1900XTX 690/800.

I switchted to the single 1950xtx because SLI was not letting me alt-tab out of games and I am limited as to the version of forceware i could use because of the ULI chipset on my mobo. I'll give OCing the CPU a shot.

I have an X1950 Pro.

Jumping from an 4000+ to an FX60 doubled my framerates @ 1600x1200 in Counter-Strike Source.

if that is the case then the op could o/c his x2 3800, and i was able to get mine to stable 2.5GHz @ stock V, which is only 100MHz shy of the fx60

but different games scale differently with cpu - a lot of them are gpu limited, which the x1950xtx probably took care of for the most part

CS:S is definitely not a game I would get too excited over frame rates doubling. It's CPU limited in almost every resolution.

Try FEAR or something with more pixel shading muscle and I think you'll see the gains are about 5% if that.

Well, I got my X2 3800+ up to 2.4ghz, running stable. Installed ATT to kick in the fan on a faster speed, card is runnig very cool. All my games are running very smooth. Quake 4 on the highest settings is running smooth, FEAR running great, Oblivion running great BUT, I thought with the ATI card it could do HDR and AA/AF but it doesnt. Other that that this card kicks but. Even MS FSX is playable. 🙂 Thanks for the help guys.

I was wondering the same thing too..... I have an X1950XT with an AMD64 3500+... I was thinking of just watching for any good deals on the high end Socket 939 CPU's. I am thinking of going at least Dual Core to help with multi-tasking.

rig:
-3rd party cooler on OC'd 1900XT 512, surpasses stock 1900 XTX speeds

-E4300 at 3.1 GHz on an Asus x975 mobo with 3GB OCZ DDR1000

if you're not satisfied with OC speeds, then just get an OC core2 and watch your frame rates bleed harder

good luck
