So I finally got my acceptance to U Waterloo Computer Engineering... and I realize that the decision making has only begun!

Where to say, where to stay...

Waterloo has lots of different types of residences -- apartment style, single room, double room, semi-kinda-apartment style, semi-kinda-dorm-style...

Basically it comes down to two factors: (a) do I want to cook for myself and have my own kitchen or buy a meal plan and (b) do I want to have my own washroom or share one with an entire floor?

Before anyone gives advice, I will say that my cooking ability doesn't extend beyond tomato soup. But, on the other hand, it's not like I can't learn. And, generally speaking, I don't like to sit down for a formal meal... I like to have munchies while playing computer games. :) Not only that, but I think I'd waste a meal plan because I don't tend to eat that much. So it might save money. On the flip side, a nice hot meal prepared by someone who knows how to cook is always nice too.

As for the washroom bit, I do like my privacy. I'm not one of the guys you'll see who starts stripping as he's walking into the dressing room, walks around naked for twenty minutes for no apparent reason and then goes to play some sports. I like to take long, hot showers and I don't like competing for a shower either. Obviously everyone would prefer their own washroom... It's a trade-off because I think out of all the rooms availble, I'd like just a single dorm room because people won't bug me, but then I have to put up with this whole-floor-one-washroom deal and a meal plan...

If I go with more of an apartment style, I have my own kitchen, my own washroom, but now I've got roommates to put up with.

So right about now I'm wishing I could take the pros and cons and put them on a balance scale and observe which way it falls. :disgust:

I'm a junior in Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State Universtiy. I would suggest staying in the dorms your first year. Every one is really nice and they all want to meet new people. Everyone is in the same boat you are, and though the dorms can be less than private at times, I still think it's a great experience that everyone should try at least once. In my opinion it's the best way to make new friends, perhaps one that you would want to get an apartment with next year, that's what happened to me.

Congrats man!!

I didn't get anything yet from their Eng faculty yet..although I did get a package from their Comp Sci dept...so I got into Comp Sci at Waterloo...don't know yet about Comp Eng from them.

I did get into Comp Eng at UofT though...which I am happy about!

If I do get into Comp Eng at Waterloo, I'm not sure where I should go...either UofT or Waterloo...

I'm only pretending that I have a life atm. It's actually a lot easier to have no time for a girlfriend than to have time for one and not be able to get one. =p

I'm not, but I have a friend on Software Engineering at Waterloo, and I can confirm what they've said. Its best if you stay in dorm, but keep in mind that you'll have nothing even resembling a life for 8 months and you'll spend an incredible amount of time studying. Its VERY hard.

As for me, I got accepted at UfT Comp Eng, so I'll be heading there, should be quite hard too.

Btw, what was your midterm average?

I managed a mere 90.5% Would've been 91 if I hadn't missed ONE shot with my projectile launcher, lol.

I did get into Computer Engineering at UofT tho and since that's a better program and all...it's not that bad...atleast that is what I keep on telling myself.

Computer engineering? Thought twice about it?? :)

Don't get me wrong. I only have one more major subject before I get my degree in CE. :) Things are HELL. :) You don't pretend to have a life. You try hard to even have the least of time to hang out for a drink. :D

Don't feel very bad, Waterloo's a hicktown and costs a lot. My friend from Waterloo told me that UfT's program is held in high regard and their coop program is popular too, since people can work for 16 months straight rather than 4 months at a time.

I didn't even bother applying to Waterloo, UfT's very good too.

I know UofT is good and all...I just don't like getting rejected..that's all.

I'm also pissed cause I took a lot of time to write that long-ass essay and it was all for nothing. Bastards! I even sent it by FedEx..that cost me $10!! :|
