Trying to figure out how to do some things like:

1) Get notifications via a light or something? So I can look at my phone and know I have a missed email or call or whatever...

2) Bypass the slide to unlock? Because I don't accidentically start my phones if I press the on button it should go directly to home screen

3) Set a home page for Safari?

Welcome to Apple, where you do things our way or piss off**. Jailbreaking may solve some of those things, look around for apps in Cydia for those requirements.

**Running a 3GS myself, official 4.2.1, no JB.

Blatant? You mean it's completely impossible that he came from a phone like a BB or Android where all that is possible and just didn't consider that Apple wouldn't let him do the same things? When I went from my BB to my Android phone I had transitional questions too. That doesn't mean I was anti-Android, it just meant I had to learn the Android way of doing those things.

1) The fact that cant be done is why i like the iphone. My wife has had droid phones for years, and every goddamn one of them lights up some obnoxiously bright light if a text or e mail comes in. My bedroom looks like a baseball stadium if she forgets to turn the phone face down before going to sleep. Enjoy your phone and use audio if you want to know, or press the home button to check it periodically.

2) Again, without this you would hang up on people when you pick up the phone when its ringing since the incoming call activates the screen, etc etc. It takes less than half a second to unlock it, whats the problem... i even have a passcode on mine and it doesnt bother me in the least, i know i wont accidentally do anything to my phone in my pocket or anywhere else, AND if for some unforseen reason my phone is lost, i dont have to worry too much about anything on it being accessed.

3) Home page? This isnt a computer. Plus, the system stores where you were last, just like if you were to never close your browser on your computer, whenever you bring it up, theres where you were before.

You have the best phone on the market right now (imo anyway), if YOU dont like it, then you shouldnt have bought it, or done more research on it prior to doing so. Ido think if you use it for a little while though, it will become normal, and youll love the phone.

Uh yea I paid $750 for my 32gb iPhone 4 from Verizon yesterday, I own iPods and a $1700 Macbook Air.

I don't think I own all that Apple stuff to bash them, it would be an incredibly stupid way to do with my own money lol...

No, I never really got to play with iPhones extensively enough that I just figured #1-3 were doable somehow if you wanted it. They are annoyances at this point but not dealer breakers. Flash ah yes Flash... it would be nice to watch Flash stuff but I think there is a browser out there that can do it if I wanted to pay for it.

Um yea, I love the phone but it's INSPITE of lacking #1-3, the options for #1-3 for people who want them are obviously better than not having them.

Fanboyism makes one crazy...

Well it is at least good to know that #1-3 is not possible without jailbreaking so I don't have to be trying to look for solutions in vain.

You can "fix" all items except the light one with jailbreaking.

Actually maybe there's a way to have the flash for the camera do something like that, but I just haven't heard of it.

That isnt a bad idea for an app actually ;)

Some programs in Cydia do use the camera flash as a notification. I don't use it though, too bright and on the back of the phone, so its no good if its laid on a table.

Yeah, I like to think im NOT a fanboy yet, I have the iPod, i have the iPhone and I have the Air, and love them all. BUT, i do still use windows and Linux REGULARLY, so I think im fairly balanced at this point. Heh. It might slowly be creeping up though...

One of the things I love about my iPhone is it's nothing like the BB Bold I have for work. I can't stand that blinking LED. :)

Lol you think that the iphone is the best phone in the market? Not even close.

Keep your fanboyism raging in your blood.

I'm the opposite, I loved having the LED light different colors for different notifications so that I could just look at the phone without turning on the screen to see if I had a text, work email, personal email, FB notification, etc. It's one of the things I miss most from my BB now that I have an Incredible.

I think you are confusing my OPINION, because i LIKE the phone, have had no issues with it, and have no WISHES of it beyond what it does for me for fanboyism. If i was a fanboy i would use NOTHING but apple products. I don't, read my above post.

Obviously your opinion differs from mine. Care to explain why? I have an open mind and will consider anything.

Im not opposed to Android phones at all, i have a wife and several freinds that use them and they are happy with them. I just like the iphone better.

Your anti-appleism is more annoying than any fanboy I've seen. He went out of his way to say that is was his OPINION that he posted. You're riding him like he's trying to post a fact. He's allowed to have an opinion, and you can fuck right off for calling him a fanboy just because he likes the iPhone. I agree with him... The iPhone is my favorite phone on the market too. I also have never owned a Mac and think iPods have some of worst sound quality in the industry. Am I still a fanboy for enjoying the iPhone?

I should just stay clear of phone threads anymore. Every single one gets ruined by you trolls and it's just so damned frustrating.

No offense intended.

My opinion is to have open source for everything, instead of one company locking you down and try to control every aspect of the phone and its OS. I do like the iphone interface, it is smoother than android, but considering the limitations, that is why I am a little more biased towards android. I own neither of these platforms.

The iPhone ranks near, if not at the top of every smartphone ranking. It's the thing everyone compares everything else to. If you prefer another system, that's fine. Not everybody drives the same type of car either, but to says it's "not even close" is asinine.

Eh... I wonder if there is any actual iPhone fanboy here... Or at least any person who can proclaim themselves as an iPhone fanboy?

1) The screen lights up when you have a new message. Leave it upside when you sit down. Alternatively, it vibrates when you have a new message. But if you're talking about leaving the phone there for hours to go shopping then getting back to find a light on, then... that's not possible yet. The only LED on the iPhone 4 that's capable of doing so is much too bright for that task. Click the home button to see the last notification anyhow, if the screen is off and the phone is not trying to shake that milk bottle off the table.

2) Bypassing slide to unlock incurs problems as sometimes your phone can bump in your pocket and lights the screen. Remember that it's not just the power button but the home button also turns the phone on. Some apps prevent the screen from turning off so the screen may stay on that way for a long time. Draining your battery needlessly. But if you absolutely don't want to waste that 0.5s to slide your finger across the screen, jailbreak is the only solution.

3) There are third-party browsers on the App Store that will allow you to have file downloading ability, *simple* file uploading ability (Flash-based and Java-based solutions don't work, obviously), homepage, Dropbox support, offline cache (default browser doesn't have that), and even user agent settings so you can masquerade as Internet Explorer. Some will charge you a premium, but the upside is you only have to purchase it once, and it'll be installable on a number of devices.

4) Just a hint: don't try anything, even paid, that offers to let you view Flash contents on your iPhone. If you absolutely have to, use your MacBook.

5) Just another hint: don't ask anything regarding how to not run iTunes to manage your phone. You are tied to iTunes one way or another. Even jailbreaking doesn't get you that far.

Edit:

6) If there is something you can't find in the iPhone's App Store, chances are it doesn't have an alternative when you've jailbroken the phone, or the alternative is in beta state and will be broken with the next firmware update.

Number 1 is very legitimate; even more so if Apple wants to get into the business-game like they claim.

For work purposes the email notification system stinks.
