Sounds like eastern shore MD. I don't think they have the outrageous fines like that(didn't used to anyway), but they'll nail you for 5 over, or anything else they feel like. It's a state sponsored shakedown of it's citizens. At least the Mafia's honest about their intentions....

I agree with the others. Price for only 5MPH over is way too much. Call an attorney, get it pled to a non points offense. And the OP still has not said Where this ticket was issued.

Sorry, I don't buy it.

I don't believe you got a ticket for 5mph over.

And if you did, I don't believe it was for $520 that is unless it was in a school zone and work zone with workers present.

Provide a pic of ticket or a link to the fines from that city.

I have a sneaking suspicion that when you get to court the cop will be the judge's brother and their daddy is the mayor. Bring a toothbrush or lots of cash.

There are some pretty nasty fines nowadays, so I wouldn't go that far but, I'd still wager there was more than just speeding involved? Perhaps the cop was being 'nice' and wrote it for 'only' 5mph over.

Yeah, the price sounds a bit steep, aside from being pulled for such a low speed. Makes NY tickets seem dirt cheap. Which state was this OP?

Maybe it's a typo, or sloppy writing. Maybe a 3, not a 5? Even over 300 is a little high for 5 mph over.

I don't buy it. What kind of asshole cop write a ticket for +5mph? Wouldn't judge just laugh at that?

if it was in another state, just don't pay it. Of course this means you can never set foot in that state because of the arrest warrant.

Uhhhhhhhhhhh.... this varies GREATLY on what state. All tickets same coast/region will communicate to each other.

If you do this, you'll be bumfucked into oblivion when the $3000 ticket + suspension arrives at your door 2 years later.

Check the traffic fine breakdown that your city uses, it might be cheaper to fight it and say you were kidnapping someone or drunk driving.

talk to a few local attorneys and see how strict they are for the court you're assigned to. It may be worth the fight, even by yourself (if they are lenient).

5mph-over tickets = they are desperate for money... and it must not be an oft-traveled road. Otherwise they'd be way too busy.

Judges side with the cops 99.9 percent of the time. Professionalism at its best and they also don't want to give off the impression the cops can't enforce their own written laws.
