I think this may be a pretty basic question but i haven't been following the whole e-reader thing too closely. Anyway, my aunt has a Sony PRS-650 e-reader, can she buy and download books for it from Amazon or can only Kindles use Amazon?

Thanks for any help.

B&N uses ePub as well, do they not? ePub DRM is completely removable if you're good with "the Google." Is there something special about the way B&N does it that prevents this?

I've had Sony readers since the PRS-500 was first released, and although I've bought most of my books from them, I've bought ePubs from some other independent sellers as well with no issues.

if you google, you can find a way to get Kindle books on it as well, but is it really worth the trouble?

Now you have me curious... I thought no one had broken the Topaz DRM yet and that only certain, older-format Amazon books could be "freed" for use on other devices. It may well be worth it in if all that's required is a quick pass through some tool to free it and a conversion via Calibre. Amazon's prices tend to be lower on the whole than Sony's, and they have a bit broader selection depending on your reading preferences.

The tricky part is getting through the DRM, which you'll have to search for. The easy part is once it's DRM free, you can use Calibre to convert it into a format the Sony reader can see. It's cumbersome but can be done.

A perk of the B&N Nooks (either Color or e-ink) is that they can be rooted to run apps, including Amazon's e-reader app. So then you can effectively buy books from either store and run them fine. Something to keep in mind if you think of getting another one down the road.
