Got a renewed passport without the old one

StageLeft

For skoorbaby we just got a passport renewal done via USPS. We sent in her old passport and also her birth certificate. The new passport came today without the old passport (which we were told we'd get, not that we need it) and without her birth certificate. Will that come separately? Somehow I am doubting it.

I hope you didn't send in the original. I doubt you will be getting it back, or at least not any time soon.

had almost the same issue. i sent the original birth certificate and the old passport. the old passport came back but it took over a week for the certificate to come back. i called the post office that processed it and they said that this is normal since passport processing takes place in different locations, or something like that. contact USPS for clarification.

btw, you have to submit originals.

I thought a certified copy would work...

strange, i got my passport with my citizenship paper at the same time a couple weeks after i send the apps in.

OK, so it can happen.

And yes, I assumed I had to use an original. I think one has to always in cases like this, so you're basically kept with fingers crossed.

Perhaps it would. I will check into it next time, but the guy at USPS certainly didn't offer it as a choice; I presume most people send in originals.

You sent in a certified copy of the birth certificate (the original is in the public records and never with you). And yes, you will get that back in a seperate mailing shortly (mine and my wife's came back a week or two before the passports came when we got ours a few months ago). If somehow it gets lost you can get another certified copy fairly easily.

As I understand it the Post Office acts, to a certain extent, as the "agent" of the State Dept in accepting and reviewing the initial passport application. They then pack everything off to the State Dept which reviews it again and issues the passport.

When the bombs drop I want to ensure our documentation is up to snuff so that I'm not put in the refugee line and siphoned off to the camps.

AFAIK, they send each of those separately for security reasons. At least that is what the lady at the USPS office told me when I did mine, which hasn't come yet.

It will show up, the fact that they processed it is a good thing, you know it wasn't lost in the mail. Hang tight.
