Got a question about job qualifications, internships, resumes, etc...

I am a Management & Marketing double major at Virginia Tech (will graduate in May 2005) and I have a little above average GPA (3.2/4.0). College average is 2.7/4.0.

Our management department is offering a course for next fall, and I wanted to hear your thoughts on it. Course's name is "Department of Management Internship Program". Only management majors are allowed to enroll in it, and it's accepted as a substitute to one of my senior year courses. Here is the department's description of the course:

This course will give you the opportunity to obtain work experience and also learn key techniques to assist you in your personal job search process. It is a 3 credit course with A to F grading. Each student is matched with a local employer wanting expertise from Pamplin students, where they work (unpaid) for 100 hours during the semester according to a schedule arranged by the student and employer.

What do you think? Should I take it? I know it depends on who I intern with but I thought it would be a good thing to put on my resume as it is also sponsored by the Business College at Virginia Tech.

Let me know what you all think, and if any of you works in Human Resources, I would appreciate what you look for in a Management & Marketing double major.

sounds like a good opportunity to take, although i don't think that it's a substitute for a real summer internship. i would think that 100 hours is alot less than what you'd spend in a 3 credit class.

my vote: do it, but don't forget those crucial summer internships.

Thanks for the replies guys. I figured I would do it because after all, it's experience. And the fact that I can substitute it for one of my other classes just makes it more favorable. Thanks.

Heck yes I would do that. 100 hours is cake and it will look great for you in the future, a no brainer.

why did you decide to do management? I did that as an undergrad too and when I was in my last year I realized this is the only major I could do and graduate without learning a thing.

Looking back I kinda wish I did finance and econ. but then I was under the impression the only jobs finance guys get is wall street type jobs, I didn't want to do that.

with competition so stiff out there, it would give you an edge over others. Plus, you can attempt to impress the company and might get lucky and receive an actual job from it. But looks great on your resume, and will allow you to use them as references when the time comes.

First of all, thanks for all the repliles guys, I am 99% sure I am gonna do it 🙂

gotsmack: I realized the same thing a little too late, thus I am double-majoring in marketing. I didn't want to waste my already-taken courses so I am going to try and finish my management degree as well.

However one thing that I don't agree with is that it is the only major you could do and graduate without learning a thing. I know, management takes everything very broadly, but as much as it is a disadvantage, i believe it's an advantage as well. Especially when you double major w/ marketing or so, I think it's a pretty good idea to have the degree. I am taking Human Resources and Innovation classes right now, and no other majors are allowed in those. I learned a lot in those, so cool stuff 🙂
