Got a problem with a squirrel

There's a squirrel that is constantly causing havoc in my garden:
  • Digging up bulbs
  • making holes in the lawn
  • eating the nuts for the birds

How do I get rid of it? (ideally without killing it)

A CO2 powered pellet gun would be the simplest.

Either that or trap it & take it a LONG ways away.

Of course the next morning another one will be there to take it's place.

roger the pelet gun option... i have done that one, bastard squirrels stealing bird food.

Look for some traps at your local garden store. Squirrels are tough to get rid of, and you might be dealing with more than just one. If you don't want to kill it, use baited traps. You have to check the traps every day though. Another way would be to get a cat, but the cat will get rid of the birds.

If you do decide to kill it, try using a pellet gun or some sort of air rifle. Poisoning the little guys puts more animals at risk than just the squirrels. Birds can go after the poisoned food. Neighborhood cats can find a dying squirrel easy prey, as can wild carnivores such as hawks, owls, foxes, etc. If you poison the animals that are supposed to keep the squirrel population in check, you will end up having an even worse problem in later seasons.

yeah use trap ... my friend and I use to trap squirrels in his back yard since he has a pecan tree in the back

Call an animal control shelter, they probably get rid it for you.

for a measly squirrel in his backyard? are you insane? or just really out of touch.

I used to have a pet Fox Squirrel and she was the best pet I have ever had. If you want to keep the squirrel out of the garden then give him something he will like more than your bulbs. Squirrels love dried corn, it is kind of like catnip for them. Get some cheap squirrel corn at WalMart and put it in a feeder away from the garden. You might have to leave a trail of corn to get the squirrel(s) used to where the corn is but once they find it they will spend most of their time there. They may occasionallty go in the garden but not as much as before.

Squirrels are very smart. Try to make friends with it by throwing it food and watching him eat it. Eventually he will come when he hears you coming. I do this all the time in my back yard. All the squirrels come to me and I give them treats. There may be no connection but the squiirels eat all of my neighbor's siding and eaves but they totally leave mine alone. I think the little buggers are a lot smartet than you think.

set out ears of corn or other food items the squirrel would eat and enjoy the squirrel also. if you keep it occupied and well fed it will leave the other items alone. mix hot pepper powder (buy at Wal-Mart) with bird seed, birds do not taste heat, squirrels do.

My Mom has the same problem. Try putting old bird cages over your bulbs, weighed down with rocks/bricks. If that doesn't work, trying trapping them and releasing them someplace else. Or oil up the .22 rifle and get a silencer. That has results for me!

*sarcastic mode*Yea, because that squirrel has no buisness outdoors, damn him, he should have his own house like all the other squirrels. Why doesn't he get a job so he doesn't have to go to the homeless squirrel shelters and steal your food.*sarcastic mode*

Why would you shoot a squirrel for no reason other than that of being an asshole? Why not just put up a fence that can't be penetrated by the squirrel like everyone else? They deserve to live as much as you do, unless they are a danger to you or you are eating it. It's senseless. I'm not some PETA freak but come on, that's just senseless.

Please don't kill the poor inoccent squirrel!

He just wants to play with his nuts and live!

For the love of God don't kill him!! Ieee..I love him, man.

Fence that can't be penetrated by a squirrel? Considering they can climb stuff, what are you going to do - spend $1500 on a wire fence with a roof!?

I don't know if removing one squirrel will solve your problem..I counted over a dozen squirrels when I was leaving our neighborhood - they are everywhere here.
