I bought Mario Kart and FF12 and they are bought good games.
Anything cool I can do with it without having to buy more stuff? Like via wifi or something.

I'm not terribly impressed with the DS homebrew scene after having gotten into it on my PSP. Too many cards makes for too much variability in apps, and the PSP ones are generally higher quality anyways (perhaps due to processing power).

That said, yes, an R4 or the like is a good bet for doing some homebrew.

Not to threadjack but...how does one mod a psp? Is there a softmod available or is opening up and soldering required? I have been tryin to figure out if there's a softmod available for the psp but I can't find anything indicating that there is...I've seen hardware mods though.

If a hardmod is required to unlock a psp, then my decision on which handheld gaming system to buy is made much easier, because I don't want to bother with that.

R4!!!! PM me for any info you need on it.

Where can I purchase one?

There are some links around here that give you some options and details on where to buy. One of the best ones is in the Hot Deals forum.

Softmods are only possible but only on certain models. If you buy or make a Pandora's battery and magic memory stick (the process takes about 20-30 minutes) then you can bypass any official firmware and put on CFW whatever version you like.

I played my PSP only when new games out before I put CFW on it and now I have two backup batteries and the damn thing never leaves my side.
