He's a Basset Griffon Male 30lbs already fully grown. He has one brown and and one blue eye. He's a really good dog and not crazy at all. We took him to Petsmart and he was calm. He loves other dogs.

That's the Basset blood kicking in. No matter what you mix them with they're calm. Cute dog, thumbs up for rescuing a loveable mutt.

He is much calmer than my pit/bulldog mix. My pit/bulldog was a great dog but was extremely excited all the time no matter what I did. I may have to get another dog for him since he needs company. I cannot walk out of the room without him following. Maybe another of the same type but would like something different of the same size.

yeah every dog has a personality style. Pits and bulldogs alike tend to be full of energy and require a good amount of effort from the masters or else they can lose their ability to focus all that energy and instead become aggressive. It's just nature for some breeds to be energetic, and bad training just turns that energy into aggression at times from what I can tell.
My parents have a mutt, mostly lab/australian shepherd/little bit of rottweiler and who knows what else, most mostly just lab/aussie, and she is very very energetic and playful, but very defensive of us and the property - that's the aussie in her.

But  for getting a shelter mutt. My first dog was a shelter mutt, who knows what was in her, so many breeds, and she lived to be 17! Was a damn good dog for sure. Adopting abandoned dogs is a great thing! They all deserve a warm and loving environment where they can just be carefree, they don't deserve being cooped up in cages, it's just inhumane for such creatures.
