Got a hold of my granddad's old IBM PCjr.

It was originally bought by my dad back in the early 80's but he gave it to my granddad after he bought a 286 with a HARD DRIVE. 😛 My granddad was gonna toss it but I told him I wanted it. I think these things are worth money again! :Q If not it's still cool.

Original Specs:
* CPU: Intel 8088, 4.77 MHz
* Memory: 64K, expandable to 256K (later to 720K with third-party add-ons)
* Operating system: IBM PC-DOS 2.10, (Booted to BASIC without cartridge or DOS)
* Input/Output: cassette port, joystick port, RGB monitor port, composite video port, audio port, wired keyboard port, infrared keyboard sensor, serial port, two cartridge slots
* Expandability: 3 internal slots, dedicated to memory, modem, and floppy controller cards. External sidecar connector capable of daisy-chaining 3 sidecars.
* Video: Motorola 6845, "CGA Plus."
o Text modes: 40x25, 80x25, 16 colors.
o Graphics modes: 320x200x4, 640x480x2, 160x100x16, 160x200x16, 320x200x16, 640x200x4
* Sound: Texas Instruments SN76496, three voices, 16 independent volume levels per channel, white noise

My dad updated it to 640k of ram and added an "aftermarket" secondary floppy drive plus some other stuff (possibly video memory?). This thing actually came with a wireless keyboard! Plus it had a soundcard of sorts that was capable of synthesizing voice.

I had so many other programs too but the disks were no longer good. 🙁 Either that or they needed a hard drive. 😛

I have a PCjr review in an issue of Compute's Gazzette.

LOL.

My Commodore 128D had some of those features. RGB output to a 1084 monitor. Detachable keyboard, onboard 1571 dual head 5 /14 drive, SID sound chip (better sound than the PCjr had), basic 7, 128K of ram expandable to 640 k. It was 3 machines in one: a C64, C128 and a CPM machine.

It still works. 😀

And yes Electronic Arts was around then. They were around in 1981 too.

Ah, reminds me of my days with the Atari 800, 130XE, and my Mega ST4 SLM804 Laser printer.

Then I went to the dark side when I bought a 33 Mhz 386sx system! After that I stayed with the PC world and toyed with Win 3.1, OS/2 Warp 3.0, Win95, Win98, WinME, Win2K and now WinXP. Throw in some Linux in there too.

its not a 286 if it has an 8088 CPU. 286 = 80286.
I forget the differences. theyre both so slow its not really worth arguing about 😉

I've got a FPU for a 286 here somewhere (80287)

reminds me.. a while back i ran win 3.0 on a 286 w/ 4mb ram and a.. i think 800 some MB hardrive.

piss slow to say the least 😉
could never get it to run a cdrom..

It's not. The 286 was a bought as an upgrade computer.

edit: My dad's 286 was 12MHz and had a 40mb hard drive. lol.

Wow, that brings back memories! My first computer was a PC Jr., we had a whole 256KB of RAM and a 16 color IBM monitor! Woohoo! 🙂

Man I gave my mom one of those Ziggy christmas cards when I was 13. I remember mowing lawns that same summer to buy pinball construction set for the old Tandy 1000.

LOL i beat that chess game on a fluke, i must have been like 8. I remember playing half a game and then my dad taking over
and then me pointing out that the next move was mate. I remember my dad taught me how to play chess and then we played a game and i beat him. i loved that chess game, at least i can say i beat it once.
