$65 shipped seems good to me!

:D

As long as the RAM is backwards compatible with PC 2700, then it will work fine. :)

I was under the impression all ram that was 3200 is backwards compatable?

I know some older PC133 is not to PC 100, but most new modules were..

I believe so. I know my friend bought some generic PC 3200 RAM from his local PC shop for his AMD T-bird 1.1Ghz, 333mhz FSB, and worked perfectly fine.

Enjoy it - I love mine. You'd get a kick out of it sitting on top of my PC-V2000 full tower case. I could fit at least 20 minis in side of my PC. I actually use the Mac as my main machine at the moment, as it does everything except for gaming adequately for my needs. Plus, it is rock solid stable (only one random kernel panic shortly after I got it that I attribute to my plugging something in when the system was in standby) and incredibly quiet, which makes it a prime paper writing machine. I'm sure I'll start using my PC again in the summer when I have more time to game, but for the moment the mini suits me quite well.

Glad you like it.

I have a couple questions for the Mac savy..

I have a Canon PowerShot LS1 which takes AWESOME videos for a digital camera, able to zoom and what not..

I am unable to get the video transfered into iDVD, iPhoto, iMoive or even through image capture..

If I Check activity monitor it constantly gets "hung" - PTPCamera and System UI server

Any help?

And when I did try to import into iMovie is said no DV camera connect.. :| I know it's not a camcorder, i just want the AVI file off the camera!!

:D

Thanks

EDIT: Hmmm finally found it's way to the desktop.. Maybe PTPcamera just hangs whenever it's in full transfer!?!?!

IT took 4mins to import 244MB of 640x480 .avi video from my HDD to imovie.. ( seem right???)

I'm not too familiar with transfer times to imovie, but I'd guess that that isn't too far out of line, as it most likely is doing some video conversion in the process.

It seems you really can't edit .AVI files considering they are already compressed.

That sucks, since my Canon takes nice avi videos..

Got the go ahead on the ram as well ..

Hopefully it works juts fine, they had Hynix PC3200 in there so I assume this will work.

:p

Thanks!

Anand

Are these the only recommended chips to go with?

i tried some basic Mushkin PC 3200 and couldn't get the mini to boot. Put in a generic 512, booted right up.

Popped the mushkin in a working windows machine, worked just fine!

Hopefully this off brand will be good to go!

I have a gig stick of PQI PC3200 (running at 166 obviously) in my mini and it works fine. Was about 155 from newegg in early february, and others have reported similar luck with it. Normally I would have went with crucial or mushkin, but their was a 75-100 dollar difference in price, so price won out on this one:)

Good to hear..

I think it should work fine.

For $65 I couldn't pass it up.

Worst case I can sell it again if it DOESN'T work.

Cool.

Did you notice a difference from 512->1GB?

I am consitantly hitting <15MB or memory ( but everything continues to run well )

Looks like April 12th is the cutoff for $10 tiger upgrades...

I notice it a lot if I run a lot of memory hungry apps and especially Photoshop. Otherwise as long as the 512 was not getting close to being used up, there is not that much difference. It does seem faster overall due to OSX's cacheing of applications. If you do a lot of work in Photoshop or any other Memory intensive applications, or do heavy multitasking, the 1GB is highly recomended.

Well I notice after a few apps are open. Right now I have Safari, Activity monitor and the Finder open..

Free Mem: 132.77

Open up Limewire ( which i like for OSX ) ; iChat and iTunes and I drop to 15.59 MB's..

I think I will benefit quite a bit.. Unless of course, OSX just manages memory a bit different.

Is there a way to get Outlook/Outlook Express contacts into Entrouage?

With out retyping them that is.

Entourage want's to import though OE, but apprently this install of Panther doesn't have "Classic OS 9" installed. - How do I do that?

I downloaded OE for OS 8-9, and assume I can import into that, then get Entourage to import from OE.

Right?

Thanks for the help.

That seems really roundabout. I dunno how to do the import as I never looked into it.

As per your question of classic, your mini comes with a disk that you can use to install it. It allows you to run many apps from the pre-OSX era, but as a new mac user you most likely will never need to use it (it is for maintaining a level of backwards compatibility, as OSX is completely different from the previous Mac OSs on an architecture level).

So The disc that comes with the Mini does have classic OS 9 on it? Can I run the install from the desktop, or is it need to be done from a reboot?

If I can get outlook going, I believe Entourage imports just fine from there..

I'll give it a shot and update.

EDIT:

No dice, Outlook 5 still wants to import FROM outlook, can't import and address book (.wab) or anything..

It wants' all text and comma separated files.

F That, I'm not typing in 200 contacts!

Ok, first things first, the Mac Mini disc does come with Classic(MacOS 9) as an optional installation item, but you don't need it. Classic will weigh you down, and that's about it, so forget about it.

Now, as for your email issue, this is what you need to do(this is on the assumption that you're using Outlook 2003 on your PC, and Entourage 2004 on your Mac):

In Outlook, go to File->Import & Export->Export To a File->Comma Seperated Values(DOS). Then when you need to select a folder to export, select your Contacts folder, name the resulting file whatever you'd like to.

Copy this file over to your Mac, and in Entourage, go to File->Import->Import Information From a Text File->Import Contacts from a tab- or comma-delimited text file. Select the text file you copied over previously, and it will then ask you about mapping different fields to the right type; this should all be correct already. Just hit the Import button from here, and you should be set.:)

Will do.

And I should remove the OS 9? Not even good for a rainy day? ;)

Will update in a few..

EDIT: GOod instructions Virge, but no dice..

Got the contacts Exported in Outlook 2k3 ( excel file )

When I pull it up on the Mac it shows CSV. Not .xls..... Imports the several hundred contacts but with no names, no info, just blank.

EDIT: Tried TAB separated values, and I got all the names and such, but NO e-mail address, no actual addresses, just names and MAYBE a phone number..

It must have something to do with the mapping of the contacts to specific fields..

Virggggggge, need some help!

WOW! That darn thing looks amazingly small and sleek. Not a bad option for those who don't have the desk space. If you can fit a mouse on ur table, you can fit the mini.

Ok, I actually ran a full test this time(last time I just mental-tested the process), and have realized that when you export from Outlook, it's putting everything in quotes(presumably to denote strings), but this is not proper notation for a CSV file in most cases, and is causing lots of breakage in the process. The easiest way to fix this is after you export the file, open it up in Excel, then save it again as a new CSV file, thereby having Excel output the data in the correct format. Then copy the new CSV file over to the Mac, run the import, and when it comes time to field mapping, some stuff will be mapped correctly via auto-mapping(name, birthday, etc), and you'll have to manually drag&drop fields(such as email address) from the left pane to the right to fix the rest of the mappings. Once you do this, your contacts should import.

And yes, you should remove OS 9. It was effectively depreciated 4 years ago, and officially 2.5 years ago.

In Outlook, go to File->Import & Export->Export To a File->Comma Separated Values(DOS).

:D

Nope. Resaved with no luck.

All the names come in correctly, but NO information reguarding anything else is in there..

Not even addresses, let alone email addys..

What am I missing.

Thanks for the help.
That's correct, you need to drag&drop fields to fix the rest of the mappings, Entourage isn't smart enough to do it on its own.

Not to sound like an idiot, but, drag and drop what?
On the mapping screen in Entourage, on the right pane there is a list of fields found in the file you're importing, and in the left pane there's a list of fields Entourage uses. To do the manual mappings, you need to drag the fields from the right pane to the matching field in the left pane(drop it on the right side of this pane).

Hmm.. Dragged over pretty much every Unmapped field to the left.. And still no luck, it doesn't seem like they actaully are added when I drag from the unmapped to the mapped side..

Still missing boatloads of info.

When you drag a field over, it should be removed from the list on the right, and instead occupy the same column as the Entourage fields on the left. It's a bit confusing to desribe, but once you do it, it makes perfect sense.
