I have sp2 on my laptop and sp1 on my desktop. I never bothered to upgrade to sp2 on my desktop cause of the hassle (takes a long time, more than 30 mins). I don't have any personal info on my desktop anyways, and I do all my purchases/etc on my laptop where I"m pretty certain there's no spyware/viruses.

Why would you be using SP1? With all the security fixes of SP2, it just makes no sense to continue using SP1.

I just hate how SP2 goes "OH MY GOD YOU ARE INSTALLING A PROGRAM, I MEAN HOLY SH** NOBODY DOES THAT OMG! OMG! OMG!" Although once I've turned that off, it's not bad.

Um... uh... SP2 doesn't do that... at least not that I've ever seen.

It seems to happen mostly with really old Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 applications, which I guess most people don't care about - but when you are a musician and have a bunch of old gear with patch editing software from the mid 90s, it's pretty impotant that those apps actually work.

not to derail this topic but do you guys know how the xga screen fares on this laptop? I dont care too much for the higher rez, is the only difference between this and the uxga the glossy screen and ifso how much of a difference does it make?

Well, if you're going to be gaming you'll pretty much want the XGA anyway for the lower native res - I'd take it vs the UWXGA for sure. However if you're going to be comparing code side by side on this machine (which is probably what I'd use this laptop for) then the high res of the Ultra would be better. Gaming would still be a problem at that high of a native res, though, and honestly it's probably a bit much even for comparing code.

It would've been nice if they had a WSXGA version...

I'm also looking into buying a laptop, although not for months to come. I do want to get familiar with them, so I've done a little reading on some sites and customizing on the Dell site. One thing that I don't like about customization is that I'm only being offered two choices for video cards - the useless intergrated chip and the $300 7800 Go. It'd be nice to have some middle ground.

I own this notebook too, I am still trying to decide to keep this or not. I didnt realize it didnt have the GTX untill after it was shipped. I can run 1920x1200 cs:s or dod:s with no FSAA but 8x anio, and recieve an average 60+.

I tried to find out if I could order a 7800 GTX Go, dell chat said I could not because it was actually onboard or something like that. I have tried to disassemble my notebook to verify this and to apply artic silver to the gpu, but I wasnt successful. Has anyone been able see if it is MXM card? Anyone else know how to get the corners unlatch to get it apart?

I sadly have 1 stuck pixel, stuck red, which rather sticks out when playing games or watching movies.

Sooner or later I am going apply some Arctic Silver 5 to the GPU to see if it will help keep the temps down. Many 9300 owners did this with success. For now, I actually underclocked it in 2D mode and left it nearly stock for 3D mode.
I paid just over $1,500 with shipping for the E1705 and got $1,100 out of my 9300.

Hmmm, still loving my 9300 but if I can upgrade to a new processor and video card for $400 or $500 that doesnt sound to bad. What were the specs of that 9300 and where did you sell it?

Mine has 1.6gig Pentium M
60gig 7200rpm hd
6800 go 256mb
1.256gigs of memory
the UXGA+ or whatever the best screen you could get for it.

OOPS! Forget about this option. I may just do this

upgrading you 9300 to an ultra or 7800 with photo guide

What clock speeds have you guys settled on?

I am still trying to determine what are good 2d/3d speeds to set and leave 24/7.

Thats so gay, damn it dell... why did they have to underclock the gpu that far i read the 6800 ultra mobile beats the stock 7800 GTX E1705 gpu.
Heres what i normal Geforce Go 7800 GTX scores
http://www.hothardware.com//viewarticle.aspx

That kind of makes me angry because i was thinking of getting the E1705 but now that i think abt it the stock Go 7800 gets beat by the 6800 ultra mobile i thought it was going to be a huge upgrade from the 6800 ultra mobile i guess not, a disappointment. Even though you can overclock it to reach the 7800 GTX speeds which is 400/550
The Dell E1705 7800 GTX core speed is at 250mhz compared to the Dell XPS M170 7800 GTX's core clock which is 450mhz

Just FYI, the 7900 Go GTX works in the E1705/9400 laptop and Merom has also been confirmed to work in the XPS M1710 which means it will work in the E1705/9400. Furthermore, the 7900 GS will be released soon by Dell and that also works in the E1705/9400. So I wouldn't worry too much about the 7800 go being slow right now because once the 7900 GS and GTX become available at dell spare parts you should be able to order one of those. I received my E1705 on Monday and have the 7800 go clocked at 410/910 right now but I haven't had a chance to run 3dmark yet.

I just returned my E1705 today and re-ordered a new one with a 7900 Go GS video card in it (they just came out today). Price came out to $200 more than I paid before but it's worth it since the 7900 GS has 20 pipes/7 vertex shaders/smaller process vs. 16 pipes 6 vertex shaders on the 7800 go.

I have the same notebook.

what is your battery life? I average 2-2:40 when im just doing basic browsing. Its usually closer to the 2 hour mark.
